Woodwork Crafts – The Beginners Guide To Woodworking 8×8 Storage Shed Plans

Woodworking as a hobby can be among the most rewarding experiences you will ever enjoy. You can begin on a shoestring with a minimal amount of tools and equipment. A small home workshop may produce a broad array of simple projects that will help you develop your creative and building skills while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products that you are able to enjoy and also give away to family and friends.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you should begin with, let us talk about where you’ll do your woodworking, Depending on the dimensions of your house, you may have the ability to create a dedicated space into your woodworking activities. This might be a reserved place in your garage or in your basement. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding might be perfect to set up your first shop. A heated store detached from your home offers one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement assignments will inevitably produce dust which travels into the living area of your home. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air returns located in the basement draw up dust into the upper levels of the house. Another advantage of detached workshops is, clearly, the noise level. You can work without disturbing the remainder of the household. A good compromise could be the garage of your property.

This can help minimize the difficulties of dust and noise, however based on where you live, a keyword garage layout might not be practical during extremes of cold or hot weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is obviously a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your evolution, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes that they include more space to function in. 8×8 Storage Shed Plans if you can have a dedicated spot for a marathon all the better. Floor tools and bench top equipment can stay in position from project to project. If this installation is not hopeless, at least attempt to make a chair area where equipment can be saved and pulled out as needed. If at all possible plan for inevitable expansion as you get more tools and gear. At the beginning, establish a seat area where you are able to store and use the majority of your gear, using a temporary expansion of your actions onto the basement or garage floor.

A basic workbench could be constructed from cheap spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be around waist height. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to home your hand power tools and a pegboard above the seat to hang additional gear. Put in a woodworking at one end of your seat on front to maintain tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, 8×8 Storage Shed Plans

The reach of your start-up equipment will be mostly based on your financial plan. Whether you have got large financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring always buy quality gear. If you can afford it, then purchase your quality tools in the regional construction and hardware centre. If your budget is tight purchase quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other local ads. You will find plenty of quality gently used programs out there which belong to individuals who embarked on that one molding project around the home or received tools as gifts which they won’t ever use. You can usually purchase tools for all these sellers for under half the original cost and save even more money should you make a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, acquiring tools from private individuals will take extra time and possibly travel expenses. Weigh out the advantages of traveling around town to save a few added dollars on a cheap piece of equipment. The extra expense of time and travel in these situations is usually justified when purchasing large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or high finished tools such as surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a visit to your construction center may be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient employees worked with a minimal amount of hand equipment yet produced sophisticated and intricate bits. Focus on developing your abilities with your start-up set of tools and prevent lamenting about the equipment you wished you’d.
Here is a listing of the more useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated with eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses that also offer you some side protection to your eyes. Purchase a quality acrylic collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper plastic pairs will gradually impair your vision and influence security. Avoid wearing gloves in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up quickly. You can avoid wearing them all together if you find them uneasy.

The next bit of critical safety gear you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is nearly as critical as eye protection. Woodworking can be long-term and noisy exposure to those noise levels can affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. I am keeping the dust out of my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Often referred to as a skill saw following the popular name, this can end up being the most flexible instrument in a startup workshop. In reality, at the hands of an expert, a power hand saw could be employed to construct an entire property. Eventually, you are going to want to buy a table saw, but for the time being, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a budget enables him to do cross cuts, tear cuts and even intricate angle cuts. As mentioned before get an excellent manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These tend to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you even start your next job. After selecting the right saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they are a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a backup and install an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add great versatility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This versatile tool can’t only cut corners. It is perfect for cutting holes in wood also like handle slots. At some point, you’re going to want to obtain a band saw. Bandsaws are even more flexible but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw can be a fantastic stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Purchase an range of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase a quality drill that runs on at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch chuck within the conventional 3/8 inch version. Down the road, the 1/2 inch version will end up being versatile. Through tough lessons learned, I have discovered that buying quality, in this case, is much more critical than ever. Cheaper drills tend to have very short run times and have to be recharged frequently. Their battery life will be bad and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slide often. This is one annoyance you don’t want in your workshop. Buy an assortment of superior carbide tipped drill bits which are kept in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Make a habit of returning each drill bit to its prospective slot at the holder after each use. Lastly, get a set of hard steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a versatile screwdriver, particularly if you selected an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most flexible instrument in the store, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the one instrument where most workshop accidents occur. Even though the most frequent, hammer accidents are often of a minor nature, varying from bruised palms into the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what is the difference between a inexpensive hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and head. The good hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and comes with a comfortable grip. Most hammers in the high-quality range offer metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers usually have wood handles with poor joints between the handle and head. The head typically comes loose and the instrument becomes useless. Pick a title brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce scope for overall work and also a smaller finishing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using big framing hammers in the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These types of hammers are more appropriate to rough framing jobs and are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Buy a 1/4 sheet . This tiny power tool can manage pretty much any sanding requirements you’ve got as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you’ll likely update to a floor model disc and belt sander. However, for now, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited quantities of surface space. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll discover that your palm sander with a bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual functions of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and shape rough planks with 100 grit paper and after finish your job with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Purchase an range of sandpaper sheets with an excess supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll get that this caliber of paper the most versatile on your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are essential in every workshop. |} Although low tech in concept, these tools enable you to taper borders, sew high stains and correct any imperfections in wood pieces. {Start with a standard amount 4 airplane and an range of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold down your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are costly and it normally requires the novice woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a detailed set of timber clamps. Begin with a pair of long”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure remains the same. Get a set of the maximum clamps which you can spend. You may get in touch with them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their full length for larger jobs.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed at the end of the bench is ideal for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and hole cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and prevent metal working vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices using their wood clamping surfaces can securely hold wood bits without marring or damaging them. Many of the better vices offer quick release mechanisms that enable the user to rapidly open and close the jaws with no dull handle turning. The timber beamed surfaces in your vice will periodically require replacement. I prefer to use soft pine in my vices which will not crush or damage lots of the various woods that I utilize. Whether I am working in walnut or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape step will be among your most often used tools. Buy a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a wide tape typically from the 25-foot range. Even though in your store you might not be using the tape at these spans, the larger tape measures offer more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slide off the end of boards. Measuring when you’re on your own will be a great deal easier, and of course, quality tape steps can last for several decades.

When marking jobs, I prefer a sharp great old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a wonderful mark without scratching the timber. Harder pens like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require extra sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Apollo 8

Apollo 8, the second manned spaceflight mission flown in the United States Apollo space program, was launched on December 21, 1968, and became the first manned spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, reach the Moon, orbit it, and return.[1][2][3] The three-astronaut crew—Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders—were the first humans to fly to the Moon, to witness and photograph an Earthrise, and to escape the gravity of a celestial body. Apollo 8 was the third flight and the first crewed launch of the Saturn V rocket and was the first human spaceflight from the Kennedy Space Center, located adjacent to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Originally planned as the second crewed Apollo Lunar Module and command module test, to be flown in an elliptical medium Earth orbit in early 1969, the mission profile was changed in August 1968 to a more ambitious command-module-only lunar orbital flight to be flown in December, as the lunar module was not yet ready to make its first flight. Astronaut Jim McDivitt's crew, who were training to fly the first lunar module flight in low Earth orbit, became the crew for the Apollo 9 mission, and Borman's crew were moved to the Apollo 8 mission. This left Borman's crew with two to three months' less training and preparation time than originally planned, and replaced the planned lunar module training with translunar navigation training.

Apollo 8 took 68 hours (almost three days) to travel the distance to the Moon. The crew orbited the Moon ten times over the course of twenty hours, during which they made a Christmas Eve television broadcast in which they read the first ten verses from the Book of Genesis. At the time, the broadcast was the most watched TV program ever. Apollo 8's successful mission paved the way for Apollo 11 to fulfill U.S. president John F. Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. The Apollo 8 astronauts returned to Earth on December 27, 1968, when their spacecraft splashed down in the northern Pacific Ocean. The crew members were named Time magazine's "Men of the Year" for 1968 upon their return.
