WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the equipment you ought to begin with, let’s discuss where you’ll do your woodworking, based on the size of your house, you might be able to produce a dedicated space into your woodworking tasks. This may be a reserved place on your garage or in your cellar. Sometimes, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to set up your first shop. A heated shop detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without complex dust control methods, basement workshops will inevitably produce dust that travels into the living area of your home. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air returns located in the basement draw up dust into the top levels of the home. Another benefit of detached workshops is, clearly, the sound level. You can work without disturbing the remainder of the family. A fantastic compromise could be the garage of your property.

This might help decrease the difficulties of dust and noise, however based on where you reside, a keyword garage layout might not be practical during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is obviously a challenge for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your evolution, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes that they add more space to work in. Buy Woodworking Plans Online if you can have a dedicated spot for a marathon all the greater. Floor gear and bench top equipment can remain in place from project to project. If this setup is not hopeless, at least attempt to create a bench area where equipment can be saved and pulled out as needed. If at all possible plan for inevitable growth as you get more tools and gear. At the beginning, set up a seat area where you are able to store and use most of your equipment, with a temporary expansion of your actions onto the basement or garage floor.

A rudimentary workbench can be constructed from cheap spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench needs to be about waist height. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the bench to house your hand power tools along with a pegboard above the bench to hang additional gear. Install a woodworking vice at one end of your bench on front to maintain small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Buy Woodworking Plans Online

The scope of your start-up equipment will be largely based on your budget. Whether you’ve got large financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring always purchase quality equipment. If you can afford it, buy your quality tools at your local building and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from the others through Kijiji or alternative local advertisements. There are an abundance of quality lightly used tools out there which belong to people who embarked on that one molding job around the home or received tools as presents that they won’t ever utilize. You can usually buy tools for these sellers for less than half of the initial cost and save even more money should you create a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, getting tools from private individuals will require extra time and possibly travel expenses. Weigh out the benefits of traveling across town to save a few extra dollars on a inexpensive piece of gear. The excess expense of travel and time in these scenarios is usually justified when buying large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or large finished tools like surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a visit to your construction center could possibly be the best approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient workers worked using a minimal amount of hand equipment yet produced sophisticated and intricate pieces. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your start-up set of tools and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you had.
Here’s a checklist of the useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected by eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses that also offer some side protection for your eyes. Buy a quality oil collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper plastic pairs will eventually hamper your vision and influence security. Avoid wearing gloves in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing them all together if you find them uncomfortable.

The next bit of crucial safety equipment you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker yet is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking may be long-term and noisy exposure to those noise levels can affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. I’m keeping the dust out of my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently known as a skill saw following the favorite brand name, this can end up being the most versatile tool in a startup workshop. In reality, at the hands of a professional, a power hand saw could be employed to build an entire house. Eventually, you are going to want to buy a table saw, but for the time being, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a funding empowers him to do cross cuts, rip cuts and even intricate angle cuts. As mentioned earlier get a quality manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These tend to cut back and will burn out before you even start your second project. After selecting the proper saw put in an excellent blade. Most skill saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a backup and install a quality blade with carbide teeth. Begin with a hybrid blade. All these possess a balanced enamel count which works well with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add great flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This versatile instrument can’t just cut corners. It’s perfect for cutting holes in timber too like handle slots. At some point, you’ll want to get a band saw. Bandsaws are much more flexible but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw can be a fantastic stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Purchase an range of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill which runs at 12 volts, nevertheless, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss over the standard 3/8 inch model. Through hard lessons learned, I have found that buying quality, in this scenario, is more critical than ever. Cheaper drills tend to get very short run times and have to be recharged frequently. Their battery life tends to be bad and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is one annoyance you don’t need in your workshop. Purchase an assortment of quality carbide tipped drill bits which are kept in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning each drill piece to its prospective slot at the holder after every use. Lastly, get a pair of hard steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a flexible screwdriver, especially if you picked an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most versatile tool in the shop, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop accidents happen. Although the most ordinary, hammer accidents are usually of a minor character, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what is the difference between a inexpensive hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and head. The good hammer is balanced, does not rust and comes with a comfortable handle. Many hammers in the high-quality range offer metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with inferior joints between the handle and head. The head usually comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Select a name brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce range for overall work and a smaller finishing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using large framing hammers at the workshop and any with dimpled mind tips. These kinds of hammers are more appropriate for rough framing jobs and are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet palm sander. This little power tool can handle just about any sanding requirements you’ve got as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you will probably upgrade to a floor version disk and belt sander. However, for now, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up edges, cross cuts and even limited amounts of surface space. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll find that your palm sander with a bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and shape rough planks using 100 grit paper and later finish your job with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Buy an assortment of sandpaper sheets using an extra supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll get that this grade of paper the most versatile on your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are a must in each workshop. |} Although low tech in theory, these tools enable you to taper borders, flatten high spots and correct any imperfections in wood pieces. {Begin with a typical amount 4 plane and an range of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold off your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it normally requires the beginner woodworker a few years to collect a detailed set of timber clamps. Begin with a pair of long”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, but the structure is still the same. Get a set of the maximum clamps that you can afford. You can contact them for smaller glue jobs and enlarge them to their full length for bigger jobs.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed at the end of your seat is ideal for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and hole cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking with stainless steel clamping surfaces and avoid metal functioning vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices with their timber clamping surfaces can securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the greater vices offer you rapid release mechanisms that enable the user to quickly open and close the limbs without tedious handle turning. The wood clamping surfaces on your vice will periodically need replacement. I would rather utilize soft walnut in my vices which will not crush or damage many of the different woods that I utilize. Whether I’m working in walnut or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape step is going to be among your most often used tools. Buy a fantastic excellent name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually in the 25-foot range. Even though in your shop you may not use the tape at these lengths, the bigger tape measures provide more rigid tapes which will not flop around and slide off the ending of boards. Measuring when you’re on your own will be a lot easier, and naturally, quality tape measures can last for several decades.

When marking jobs, I favor a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pen will generate a wonderful mark without scratching the timber. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will need additional sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.
