The Benefits of Woodworking Cool Easy Woodworking Projects

Woodworking as a hobby can be among the most rewarding experiences you will ever appreciate. You may get started on a shoestring with a minimum amount of gear and equipment. A little home workshop may produce a broad variety of simple projects which can allow you to develop your creative and building skills while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products that you are able to appreciate and even give away to family and friends.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the equipment you ought to begin with, let us discuss where you will do your woodworking, based on the size of your home, you may have the ability to produce a dedicated space into your woodworking tasks. This might be a reserved place on your garage or in your cellar. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding may be perfect to prepare your very first shop. A heated store detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without complex dust control systems, basement workshops will inevitably create dust that travels to the living area of your home. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields found in the basement draw dust up into the upper levels of the house. Another benefit of detached workshops is, clearly, the sound level. You can work without disturbing the rest of the household. A fantastic compromise might be the garage of your home.

This might help minimize the problems of dust and noise, however depending on where you live, a keyword garage layout may not be practical during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your evolution, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes that they add more space to work in. Cool Easy Woodworking Projects if you’re able to have a dedicated spot for a marathon all the greater. Floor gear and bench top equipment can stay in position from project to project. If this setup isn’t hopeless, at least attempt to make a chair area where equipment could be stored and pulled out as necessary. If at all possible plan for inevitable expansion as you acquire more tools and gear. At the start, set up a seat area where you can store and use most of your gear, using a temporary expansion of your activities onto the garage or basement floor.

A rudimentary workbench can be constructed from inexpensive laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench needs to be around waist height. Add a sturdy shelf below the seat to home your hands power tools and a pegboard over the bench to hang additional equipment. Put in a woodworking at one end of the bench on the front to maintain small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Cool Easy Woodworking Projects

The reach of your startup equipment will be mostly based on your financial plan. Whether you have got big financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring always purchase quality gear. If you can afford it, then buy your quality tools in your local building and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from the others through Kijiji or alternative regional advertisements. You will find plenty of quality gently used tools out there which belong to individuals who embarked on that 1 molding job around the house or obtained tools as presents which they will never use. You can usually buy tools for all these sellers for under half of the initial cost and save even more money if you create a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, acquiring tools from private individuals will require additional time and possibly travel expenses. Weigh the benefits of traveling around town to save a few extra dollars on a cheap piece of equipment. The extra cost of time and travel in these scenarios is usually justified when purchasing large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or large ended tools like surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your construction center could possibly be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled employees worked with a minimal quantity of hand gear yet generated sophisticated and intricate bits. Focus on developing your abilities with your start-up set of tools and avoid lamenting about the equipment you wished you had.
Here is a listing of the useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected by eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses that also offer some side protection for your eyes. Purchase a quality acrylic set that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of thinner vinyl pairs will gradually hamper your vision and influence safety. Avoid wearing gloves in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up quickly. You can avoid wearing them all together if you find them uncomfortable.

The next bit of critical safety equipment you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection can be overlooked by the novice woodworker yet is almost as critical as eye protection. Woodworking can be noisy and long-term exposure to these noise levels can affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. I prefer a very simple ball cap along with my ear muffs and eye protection. With this set up I am shielding my eyes and my ears. I am keeping the dust out of my hair. I’m good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Often referred to as a skill saw after the popular brand name, this may end up being the most flexible tool in a startup workshop. In reality, at the hands of a professional, a power hand saw could be employed to build an entire house. As mentioned earlier get an excellent manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These are inclined to cut back and will burn out before you start your next job. After selecting the right saw install an excellent blade. Most saws include a starter blade of lower quality even if they are a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a backup and install an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid . These possess a balanced enamel count that works nicely with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include great flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This flexible tool can’t only cut corners. It’s perfect for cutting holes in wood too like handle slots. At some point, you’ll want to get a ring saw. Bandsaws are even more versatile but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw may be a good stop gap to the novice woodworker.

Buy an range of blades for your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: buy an excellent drill that runs at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss over the conventional 3/8 inch version. Down the street, the 1/2 inch version will end up being versatile. Through hard lessons learned, I have discovered that buying quality, in this case, is much more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills tend to get very short run times and need to be recharged frequently. Their long-term battery life tends to be poor and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slide frequently. This is 1 annoyance you don’t need on your workshop. Buy an range of superior carbide tipped drill bits that are stored in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Make a habit of returning each drill piece to its potential slot in the holder after each use. Lastly, get a pair of tough steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a versatile screwdriver, especially if you selected an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most versatile instrument in the store, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 instrument where most workshop injuries occur. Even though the most frequent, hammer injuries are often of a minor character, varying from bruised palms into the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what’s the difference between a inexpensive hammer and a costly hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a good solid joint between the handle and mind. The fantastic hammer is balanced, does not rust and comes with a comfortable handle. Most hammers in the high tech range offer metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood handles with poor joints between the head and handle. The head usually comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a name brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce range for overall work and a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using large framing hammers at the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These types of hammers are more suited for rough framing jobs and are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet palm sander. This tiny power tool can handle just about any trimming requirements that you’ve got as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you will probably update to a floor model disc and belt sander. But for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up edges, cross cuts and even limited quantities of surface area. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll discover your palm sander using just a little bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks with 100 grit paper and after finish your job with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Purchase an range of sandpaper sheets with an excess source of 100 grit paper. You’ll find that this caliber of paper that the most versatile in your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are essential in every workshop. |} Although low tech in concept, these tools allow you to taper borders, flatten high spots and correct any imperfections in wood pieces. {Start with a standard number 4 airplane and an range of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll need clamps for glue-ups and simply to hold off your wood pieces as you work on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it normally takes the beginner woodworker a few years to collect a comprehensive set of wood clamps. Begin with a set of extended”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe was replaced with extended steel shafts, but the structure remains the same. Get a pair of the maximum clamps that you can afford. You can contact them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their entire length for bigger projects.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed in the end of the seat is ideal for holding smaller jobs for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking vice with stainless steel clamping surfaces and avoid metal working vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices with their timber clamping surfaces can securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. Many of the greater vices offer you rapid release mechanisms that enable the consumer to rapidly open and close the jaws with no tedious handle rotation. The wood beamed surfaces on your vice will occasionally require replacement. I prefer to use soft walnut in my vices that will not crush or damage many of the different forests that I work with. Whether I’m working in soft pine or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape measure will be one of your most often used tools. Purchase a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually in the 25-foot selection. Although in your store you may not use the tape in these spans, the bigger tape measures provide more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slide off the end of boards. Measuring when you’re on your own will be a great deal simpler, and naturally, quality tape measures can endure for several years.

When marking projects, I prefer a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a nice mark without scratching the wood. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require additional sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

The Decorative Surfaces Conference is produced by TCM North America.

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Wood drying

Wood drying (also seasoning lumber or wood seasoning) reduces the moisture content of wood before its use. When the drying is done in a kiln, the product is known as kiln-dried timber or lumber, whereas air drying is the more traditional method.

Case hardening describes lumber or timber that has been dried too rapidly. Wood initially dries from the shell (surface), shrinking the shell and putting the core under compression. When this shell is at a low moisture content it will 'set' and resist shrinkage. The core of the wood is still at a higher moisture content. This core will then begin to dry and shrink. However, any shrinkage is resisted by the already 'set' shell. This leads to reversed stresses; compression stresses on the shell and tension stresses in the core. This results in unrelieved stress called case hardening. Case-hardened [wood] may warp considerably and dangerously when the stress is released by sawing.

Wood is divided, according to its botanical origin, into two kinds: softwoods, from coniferous trees, and hardwoods, from broad-leaved trees. Softwoods are lighter and generally simple in structure, whereas hardwoods are harder and more complex. However, in Australia, softwood generally describes rain forest trees, and hardwood describes Sclerophyll species (Eucalyptus spp).
