WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you ought to begin with, let’s talk about where you’ll perform your woodworking, Depending on the dimensions of your house, you may be able to produce a dedicated space to your woodworking activities. This might be a reserved spot on your garage or on your cellar. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to prepare your very first shop. A heated store detached from your house provides one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without sophisticated dust control systems, basement assignments will inevitably create dust which travels into the living area of your house. This is particularly true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air yields found in the basement draw up dust into the upper levels of the house. Another advantage of detached workshops would be, clearly, the noise level. You can work without bothering the rest of the household. A good compromise might be the garage of your property.

This can help decrease the difficulties of dust and sound, however depending on where you live, a keyword garage workshop might not be sensible during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a challenge for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your evolution, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes they include more space to function in. Cool Projects To Make Out Of Wood if you’re able to have a dedicated place for a marathon all the better. Floor tools and bench top gear can stay in position from project to project. If this installation is not hopeless, at least attempt to create a bench area where equipment could be stored and pulled out as necessary. If at all possible plan for inevitable growth as you acquire more tools and gear. In the beginning, set up a bench area where you can store and use most of your gear, using a temporary expansion of your activities onto the garage or basement floor.

A rudimentary workbench can be constructed from inexpensive laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The seat should be around waist height. Add a sturdy shelf below the bench to house your hands power tools along with a pegboard over the bench to hang other gear. Put in a woodworking vice at one end of the bench on front to hold tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Cool Projects To Make Out Of Wood

The scope of your start-up equipment will be mostly based on your financial plan. Whether you have got big financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring always purchase quality gear. If you can afford it, purchase your quality tools in your local construction and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from others through Kijiji or alternative regional ads. You will find plenty of quality gently used tools out there that belong to individuals who stumbled on that one molding project around the house or received tools as presents which they won’t ever use. You can usually buy tools for these sellers for less than half of the initial cost and save even more money should you make a package deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, acquiring tools from private individuals will require extra time and possibly travel expenses. Weigh the benefits of traveling across town to save a couple added bucks on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The extra cost of travel and time in these scenarios is generally justified when buying large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or high finished tools like surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your construction center could possibly be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient workers worked using a minimal amount of hand gear yet generated sophisticated and complex pieces. Focus on developing your skills with your start-up set of resources and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you’d.
Here’s a listing of the useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected with eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses that also offer some side protection to your eyes. Buy a quality acrylic collection that’ll be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper vinyl pairs will eventually impair your vision and affect security. Avoid wearing gloves in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing all of them together if you find them uneasy.

The next piece of crucial safety equipment you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection can be overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking can be noisy and long-term exposure to those noise levels can affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. I prefer a simple ball cap along with my ear muffs and eye protection. With this setup I’m shielding my eyes and my ears. I am keeping the dust out of my hair. I am good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently known as a skill saw following the popular brand name, this can end up being the most flexible instrument in a startup workshop. In reality, in the hands of an expert, a power hand saw could be employed to build an entire property. At some point, you’ll want to buy a table saw, but for now, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a funding enables him to perform cross cuts, tear cuts and even elaborate angle cuts. As mentioned before get a quality manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These tend to cut back and will burn out before you start your next job. After choosing the proper saw install an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a good saw. Keep this blade as a backup and put in a quality blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add excellent versatility to your woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This versatile tool cannot only cut curves. It’s ideal for cutting holes in timber too like handle slots. At some point, you’ll want to get a band saw. Bandsaws are much more flexible but a quality floor unit can be expensive. A jigsaw can be a fantastic stop gap to the novice woodworker.

Purchase an range of blades to your own jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill that runs at 12 volts, nevertheless, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it is in your budget consider a 1/2 inch toss within the conventional 3/8 inch model. Through tough lessons learned, I have discovered that purchasing quality, in this case, is more critical than ever. Cheaper drills tend to get very short run times and need to be recharged often. Their battery life will be bad and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is 1 annoyance you do not want on your workshop. Buy an assortment of quality carbide tipped drill bits which are kept in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning each drill piece to its potential slot at the holder after every use. Lastly, get a pair of tough steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a flexible screwdriver, especially if you picked an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most versatile instrument in the shop, and often the most misunderstood one. |} By the way, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop accidents happen. Although the most ordinary, hammer injuries are usually of a minor nature, varying from bruised palms into the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in quality and price. So what is the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and head. The good hammer is balanced, does not rust and features a comfortable grip. Many hammers in the high-quality range provide ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers usually have wood grips with poor joints between the head and handle. The head usually comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a title brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce scope for overall work and a smaller finishing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using big framing hammers in the workshop and some other with dimpled mind tips. These kinds of hammers are more suited to rough framing tasks and therefore are unsuitable in the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet palm sander. This tiny power tool can manage pretty much any trimming requirements that you have as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you will probably upgrade to a floor version disc and belt sander. However, for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander can clean up edges, cross cuts and perhaps even limited amounts of surface space. As you embark on the first few projects you’ll find your palm sander with just a bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks using 100 grit paper and later finish your work with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Purchase an assortment of sandpaper sheets with an extra supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll find that this grade of paper that the most versatile on your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are essential in each workshop. |} Though low tech in concept, these tools allow you to taper edges, flatten high spots and correct any imperfections in timber bits. {Start with a standard amount 4 airplane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll want pliers for glue-ups and just to hold off your wood bits as you work on them. Unfortunately, good clamps are costly and it usually requires the beginner woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a detailed set of wood clamps. Start with a pair of long”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure remains the same. Receive a pair of the maximum clamps that you can afford. You may contact them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their entire length for bigger projects.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed in the end of your bench is perfect for holding smaller tasks for sanding, filing, and hole cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and avoid metal working vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices using their wood clamping surfaces may securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the better vices offer quick release mechanisms that enable the user to rapidly open and close the limbs without tedious handle rotation. The wood beamed surfaces on your vice will occasionally need replacement. I prefer to use soft walnut in my vices that won’t crush or damage lots of the various forests that I work with. Whether I’m working in soft pine or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape step is going to be one of your most frequently used tools. Buy a fantastic excellent name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually in the 25-foot selection. Even though in your store you might not be using the tape at these spans, the larger tape measures provide more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slide off the end of boards. Measuring when you’re by yourself will be a lot easier, and of course, quality tape steps can last for many decades.

When marking projects, I prefer a sharp great old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a wonderful mark without scratching the timber.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Medium-density fibreboard

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.[1] MDF is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is stronger and much denser than particle board.[2]

Over time, the term MDF has become a generic name for any dry process fibre board. MDF is typically made up of 82% wood fibre, 9% urea-formaldehyde resin glue, 8% water and 1% paraffin wax.[4] and the density is typically between 500 kg/m3 (31 lb/ft3) and 1,000 kg/m3 (62 lb/ft3).[5] The range of density and classification as light, standard, or high density board is a misnomer and confusing. The density of the board, when evaluated in relation to the density of the fibre that goes into making the panel, is important. A thick MDF panel at a density of 700–720 kg/m3 may be considered as high density in the case of softwood fibre panels, whereas a panel of the same density made of hard wood fibres is not regarded as so. The evolution of the various types of MDF has been driven by differing need for specific applications.

Although similar manufacturing processes are used in making all types of fibreboard, MDF has a typical density of 600–800 kg/m³ or 0.022–0.029 lb/in3, in contrast to particle board (160–450 kg/m³) and to high-density fibreboard (600–1,450 kg/m³).
