A small home workshop may produce a broad array of simple projects that can help you develop your creative and construction abilities while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products which you are able to appreciate and also give away to friends and family.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you ought to start with, let’s discuss where you will do your woodworking, based on the dimensions of your home, you may have the ability to produce a dedicated space into your woodworking tasks. This may be a reserved spot in your garage or in your basement. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding might be perfect to set up your very first store. A heated store detached from your home provides one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement workshops will inevitably produce dust which travels into the living area of your house. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air returns located in the cellar draw up dust into the upper levels of the home. Another advantage of detached workshops is, of course, the sound level. It’s possible to work without bothering the remainder of the household. A fantastic compromise might be the garage of your property.

This can help decrease the problems of dust and noise, however depending on where you live, a keyword garage layout may not be sensible during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a challenge for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your development, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes that they include more space to work in. Do It Yourself Furniture Plans if you can have a dedicated place for a marathon all the better. Floor tools and bench top gear can stay in position from project to project. If this setup is not impossible, at least attempt to create a bench area where equipment could be stored and pulled out as needed. If at all possible plan for inevitable growth as you get more tools and gear. In the start, establish a seat area where you are able to store and use most of your gear, with a temporary expansion of your activities onto the garage or basement floor.

A rudimentary workbench can be constructed from inexpensive laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The seat should be about waist height. This will let you work comfortably while standing. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to house your hands power tools and a pegboard over the seat to hang other gear. Install a woodworking vice at one end of your seat on front to maintain small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Do It Yourself Furniture Plans

The reach of your start-up equipment will be largely based on your financial plan. Whether you have got large financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring consistently purchase quality equipment. If you can afford it, then buy your quality tools in your regional construction and hardware centre. If your budget is tight purchase quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other local advertisements. You will find plenty of quality lightly used programs out there that belong to people who stumbled on that 1 molding job around the house or obtained tools as gifts that they will never use. You can usually purchase tools for these sellers for under half the initial cost and save even more money should you create a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, getting tools from private people will require additional time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh out the advantages of traveling around town to save a couple extra dollars on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The excess cost of travel and time in these situations is generally justified when buying large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or high finished tools like surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your building center could possibly be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient employees worked with a minimal quantity of hand equipment yet generated sophisticated and complex bits. Focus on developing your skills with your startup set of resources and prevent lamenting about the gear you wished you had.
Here is a checklist of the more useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated by eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses that also offer you some side protection for your eyes. Buy a quality oil collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper plastic pairs will eventually hamper your vision and affect security. Avoid wearing goggles in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up fast. You may avoid wearing all of them together if you find them uneasy.

The next bit of crucial safety gear you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection can be overlooked by the novice woodworker however is nearly as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking can be long-term and noisy exposure to these noise levels can affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. Also, I find that wearing hearing protection combats fatigue.

Most workers tire faster when subjected to high noise levels. These can contain earplugs or complete ear keyword muff protectors. I find that a quality pair of ear muff guards is ideal for hearing protection.

Lastly, put on a cap to keep the dust from your hair. With this setup I’m shielding my eyes and my ears. I’m keeping the dust from my hair. I am good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently known as a skill saw following the favorite brand name, this may end up being the most flexible instrument in a startup workshop. In fact, in the hands of an expert, a power hand saw could be used to construct an entire house. At some point, you are going to want to purchase a table saw, but for now, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a funding empowers him to do cross cuts, rip cuts and even intricate angle cuts. As mentioned earlier get an excellent manufacturer saw. Avoid cheap unknown brands. All these are inclined to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you start your second project. After selecting the right saw install an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a good saw. Keep this blade as a backup and install an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid .

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add excellent flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This flexible instrument cannot only cut corners. It’s perfect for cutting holes in wood too like manage slots. Eventually, you’re going to want to obtain a band saw. Bandsaws are even more flexible but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw may be a good stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Buy an assortment of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill which runs at 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget consider a 1/2 inch chuck within the standard 3/8 inch version. Through tough lessons learned, I have found that purchasing quality, in this case, is much more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to get very short run times and need to be recharged frequently. Their battery life tends to be poor and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slip frequently. This is 1 annoyance you do not need on your workshop. Purchase an assortment of superior carbide tipped drill bits which are kept in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Make a habit of returning every drill piece to its potential slot in the holder after each use. Lastly, get a set of tough steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a flexible screwdriver, especially if you picked an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most flexible instrument in the store, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the one instrument where most workshop accidents happen. Although the most frequent, hammer accidents are usually of a minor nature, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what’s the difference between a inexpensive hammer and a costly hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and mind. The good hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and comes with a comfortable handle. Most hammers in the high-quality range provide ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with inferior joints between the head and handle. The head typically comes loose and the instrument becomes useless. Select a title brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce scope for overall work and also a smaller finishing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using big framing hammers at the workshop and any with dimpled mind tips. These types of hammers are more suited to rough framing tasks and therefore are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This little power tool can handle just about any trimming requirements that you’ve got as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you’ll probably update to a floor model disc and belt sander. However, for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander can clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited amounts of surface space. As you embark on your first few projects you might discover that your palm sander using just a bit of effort can transform rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and shape rough planks using 100 grit paper and after finish your work with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Buy an range of sandpaper sheets using an extra source of 100 grit paper. You’ll get that this caliber of paper the most versatile in your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are essential in every workshop. |} Though low tech in theory, these tools enable you to taper edges, sew high stains and correct any imperfections in wood pieces. {Start with a standard amount 4 airplane and an range of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll need clamps for glue-ups and just to hold down your wood bits as you work on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it usually requires the novice woodworker a few years to collect a comprehensive set of timber clamps. Begin with a pair of extended”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure remains the same. Get a set of the longest clamps which you can spend. You may get in touch with them for smaller adhesive jobs and expand them to their full length for larger jobs.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed in the end of your seat is ideal for holding smaller jobs for sanding, filing, and hole cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and prevent metal functioning vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices with their timber clamping surfaces may securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. Many of the better vices offer you rapid release mechanisms that enabled the consumer to quickly open and close the jaws without tedious handle rotation. The wood beamed surfaces in your vice will occasionally need replacement. I prefer to utilize soft pine in my vices that will not crush or damage lots of the various forests that I work with. Whether I am working in soft pine or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape step is going to be among the most frequently used tools. Buy a good quality name brand tape measure with a broad tape usually in the 25-foot range. Even though in your shop you may not be using the tape at these spans, the bigger tape steps offer more rigid tapes which won’t flop around and slide off the ending of boards. Measuring when you are by yourself will be a great deal easier, and of course, quality tape steps can last for many years.

When marking projects, I favor a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a wonderful mark without scratching the timber.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

Do it yourself

"Do it yourself" ("DIY") is the method of building, modifying, or repairing things without the direct aid of experts or professionals. Academic research describes DIY as behaviors where "individuals engage raw and semi-raw materials and parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g., landscaping)".[1] DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement (craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness).[2]

The term "do-it-yourself" has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 primarily in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities.[3] The phrase "do it yourself" had come into common usage (in standard English) by the 1950s,[4] in reference to the emergence of a trend of people undertaking home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational and cost-saving activity.

Subsequently, the term DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets. DIY is associated with the international alternative rock, punk rock, and indie rock music scenes, indymedia networks, pirate radio stations, and the zine community. In this context, DIY is related to the Arts and Crafts movement, in that it offers an alternative to modern consumer culture's emphasis on relying on others to satisfy needs. It has also become prevalent in the personal finance. When investing in the stock one can utilize a professional advisor or partake in do-it-yourself investing.
