The Benefits of Woodworking Dresser Woodworking Plans

Woodworking as a hobby may be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever enjoy. You can get started on a shoestring with a minimum number of tools and equipment. A small home workshop can produce a broad array of simple projects which can help you develop your creative and construction abilities while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products that you can enjoy and even give away to friends and family.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the equipment you should begin with, let us discuss where you’ll do your woodworking, Depending on the size of your house, you might have the ability to create a dedicated space into your woodworking activities. This might be a reserved spot on your garage or on your cellar. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding might be perfect to prepare your very first store. A heated store detached from your house provides one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without complex dust control systems, basement assignments will inevitably create dust which travels to the living area of your house. This is particularly true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air yields found in the cellar draw dust up into the top levels of the home. Another advantage of detached workshops would be, clearly, the noise level. It’s possible to work without disturbing the rest of the household. A good compromise might be the garage of your home.

This can help decrease the difficulties of dust and sound, however based on where you live, a keyword garage workshop might not be sensible during extremes of cold or hot weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a challenge for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your development, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes they include more space to work in. Dresser Woodworking Plans if you can have a dedicated spot for a marathon all the greater. Floor tools and bench top gear can stay in place from project to project. If this installation is not impossible, at least attempt to create a bench area where equipment can be stored and pulled out as needed. If at all possible plan for inevitable growth as you get more tools and gear. At the start, set up a seat area where you can store and use the majority of your equipment, using a temporary expansion of your actions onto the garage or basement floor.

A rudimentary workbench could be constructed from inexpensive laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench needs to be about waist height. That will enable you to work comfortably while standing. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to home your hands power tools along with a pegboard above the bench to hang additional equipment. Put in a woodworking vice at one end of the seat on the front to hold small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Dresser Woodworking Plans

The reach of your start-up equipment will be mostly based on your budget. Whether you have got large financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring consistently purchase quality gear. If you can afford it, buy your quality tools at the regional building and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from the others through Kijiji or other regional advertisements. There are an abundance of quality lightly used tools out there which belong to people who stumbled on that one molding project around the home or received tools as gifts that they won’t ever utilize. You can usually buy tools for all these sellers for less than half the original price and save even more money if you make a package deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, getting tools from private individuals will require extra time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh out the advantages of traveling across town to save a few added dollars on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The extra cost of travel and time in these situations is generally justified when purchasing large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or high ended tools such as surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your construction center may be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient workers worked using a minimal amount of hand gear yet produced sophisticated and intricate bits. Concentrate on developing your skills with your startup set of tools and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you’d.
Here’s a checklist of the useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated with eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses which also offer you some side protection for your eyes. Buy a quality acrylic collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper vinyl pairs will eventually hamper your vision and influence safety. Avoid wearing gloves in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up fast. You can avoid wearing them all together if you find them uncomfortable.

The next piece of crucial safety equipment you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is nearly as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking may be noisy and long-term exposure to these sound levels may affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. I prefer a simple ball cap with my ear muffs and eye protection. I am keeping the dust out of my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently known as a skill saw following the favorite name, this may end up being the most flexible tool in a start-up workshop. In reality, at the hands of a professional, a power hand saw can be used to build an entire property. As mentioned before get an excellent manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these tend to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you start your second job. After choosing the right saw put in a quality blade. Most saws include a starter blade of lesser quality even if they are a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a backup and install a quality blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid . These possess a balanced tooth count that works nicely with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add great versatility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This versatile instrument cannot only cut corners. It’s ideal for cutting holes in timber also like handle slots. Eventually, you’re going to want to get a band saw. Bandsaws are even more versatile but a quality floor unit could be costly. A jigsaw can be a good stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Buy an assortment of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill which runs on at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget consider a 1/2 inch chuck within the conventional 3/8 inch version. Through hard lessons learned, I have found that buying quality, in this scenario, is more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to have very short run times and have to be recharged frequently. Their long-term battery life tends to be poor and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slip frequently. This is one annoyance you don’t need in your workshop. Purchase an range of superior carbide tipped drill bits which are kept in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Make a habit of returning every drill bit to its prospective slot at the holder after every use. Last, get a set of tough steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a versatile screwdriver, particularly if you selected an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most versatile tool in the shop, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the one instrument where most workshop injuries occur. Even though the most frequent, hammer accidents are often of a minor character, varying from bruised palms into the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in price and quality. So what is the difference between a inexpensive hammer and a costly hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a good solid joint between the handle and head. The fantastic hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and comes with a comfortable handle. Most hammers in the high-quality range offer ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with poor joints between the head and handle. The mind typically comes loose and the instrument becomes useless. Select a name brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce range for overall work and also a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using big framing hammers at the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These types of hammers are more appropriate for rough framing jobs and therefore are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Buy a 1/4 sheet . This little power tool can handle pretty much any sanding requirements you’ve got as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you’ll probably update to a floor version disk and belt sander. However, for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited quantities of surface area. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll discover your palm sander with just a bit of effort can transform rough looking creations into virtual functions of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and shape rough planks with 100 grit paper and later finish your work with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Purchase an assortment of sandpaper sheets using an extra source of 100 grit paper. You’ll find that this caliber of paper the most versatile in your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are essential in each workshop. |} Although low tech in theory, these tools enable you to taper edges, sew high stains and fix any imperfections in timber pieces. {Begin with a standard number 4 plane and an range of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and just to hold off your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it normally requires the novice woodworker a few years to collect a comprehensive set of timber clamps. Begin with a pair of extended”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, but the structure is still the same. Get a pair of the longest clamps that you could spend. You can get in touch with them for smaller adhesive jobs and expand them to their full length for bigger projects.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed in the end of the seat is ideal for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and prevent metal functioning vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices with their timber clamping surfaces can securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the greater vices offer quick release mechanisms that enabled the user to quickly open and close the jaws with no dull handle rotation. The wood clamping surfaces on your vice will occasionally require replacement. I would rather utilize soft walnut in my vices that won’t crush or damage lots of the various forests that I utilize. Whether I’m working in soft pine or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape measure is going to be among your most often used tools. Buy a good quality name brand tape measure with a broad tape usually in the 25-foot selection. Although in your store you might not use the tape in these spans, the bigger tape steps provide more rigid tapes which will not flop around and slide off the ending of boards. Measuring when you are by yourself will be a great deal easier, and of course, quality tape steps can last for many decades.

When marking jobs, I prefer a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pen will produce a wonderful mark without scratching the timber. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require extra sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Biltmore Estate

Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet (16,622.8 m2) of floor space (135,280 square feet of living area).[2] Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age mansions.

In the 1880s, at the height of the Gilded Age, George Washington Vanderbilt II began to make regular visits with his mother, Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt, to the Asheville area. He loved the scenery and climate so much that he decided to build his own summer house in the area, which he called his "little mountain escape". His older brothers and sisters had built luxurious summer houses in places such as Newport, Rhode Island, and Hyde Park, New York. Vanderbilt named his estate Biltmore, derived from "De Bilt", Vanderbilt's ancestors' place of origin in the Netherlands, and "More", Anglo-Saxon for open, rolling land.[3] Vanderbilt bought almost 700 parcels of land, including over 50 farms and at least five cemeteries; a portion of the estate was once the community of Shiloh.[4]. A spokesperson for the estate said in 2017 that archives show much of the land "was in very poor condition, and many of the farmers and other landowners were glad to sell."[5]

Construction of the house began in 1889. In order to facilitate such a large project, a woodworking factory and brick kiln, which produced 32,000 bricks a day, were built onsite, and a three-mile railroad spur was constructed to bring materials to the building site. Construction on the main house required the labor of about 1,000 workers and 60 stonemasons.[6] Vanderbilt went on extensive trips overseas to purchase decor as construction on the house was in progress. He returned to North Carolina with thousands of furnishings for his newly built home including tapestries, hundreds of carpets, prints, linens, and decorative objects, all dating between the 15th century and the late 19th century. Among the few American-made items were the more practical oak drop-front desk, rocking chairs, a walnut grand piano, bronze candlesticks and a wicker wastebasket.[7]
