A little home workshop can produce a wide array of simple projects that can allow you to develop your creative and construction abilities while rewarding you with artistic and practical wood products which you are able to appreciate and even give away to friends and family.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you should begin with, let’s talk about where you will perform your woodworking, Depending on the size of your house, you may be able to produce a dedicated space to your woodworking activities. This may be a reserved spot in your garage or on your cellar. Sometimes, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to prepare your first shop. A heated shop detached from your home offers one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement assignments will inevitably produce dust which travels to the living area of your house. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields found in the cellar draw dust up into the top levels of the home. Another advantage of detached workshops would be, clearly, the noise level. You can work without disturbing the remainder of the household. A good compromise could be the garage of your home.

This might help decrease the problems of dust and noise, however depending on where you reside, a keyword garage workshop may not be sensible during extremes of hot or cold weather.

The Benefits of Woodworking Easy Diy Wood Projects

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your evolution, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes they include more space to function in. Easy Diy Wood Projects if you’re able to have a dedicated place for a marathon all the greater. Floor tools and bench top equipment can remain in position from project to project. If this installation isn’t impossible, at least attempt to make a chair area where equipment can be saved and pulled out as necessary. If possible plan for inevitable expansion as you acquire more tools and equipment. At the start, establish a bench area where you can shop and use most of your gear, using a temporary expansion of your actions onto the basement or garage floor.

A rudimentary workbench could be constructed from inexpensive spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be around waist height. Insert a sturdy shelf below the seat to house your hands power tools along with a pegboard over the bench to hang additional gear. Install a woodworking vice at one end of the seat on the front to maintain tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Easy Diy Wood Projects

The scope of your start-up equipment will be mostly based on your financial plan. Whether you’ve got big financial resources or you’re starting on a shoestring consistently buy quality gear. If you can afford it, then purchase your quality tools at your local construction and hardware centre. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other regional advertisements. You will find plenty of quality lightly used programs out there which belong to people who embarked on that 1 molding project around the home or received tools as gifts which they will never utilize. You can usually purchase tools for these sellers for less than half the original price and save even more money should you create a package deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, getting tools from private individuals will require extra time and perhaps travel expenditures. Weigh out the benefits of traveling around town to save a few added bucks on a cheap piece of equipment. The excess expense of time and travel in these scenarios is generally justified when purchasing large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or high ended tools like surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a visit to your building center may be the best approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled employees worked with a minimal quantity of hand gear yet generated sophisticated and intricate bits. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your start-up set of resources and prevent lamenting about the gear you wished you’d.
Here is a listing of the useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected with eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses which also offer some side protection to your eyes. Buy a quality oil collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of thinner plastic pairs will gradually impair your vision and influence security. Avoid wearing goggles in a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up fast. You may avoid wearing them all together in the event that you find them uncomfortable.

The next piece of crucial safety gear that you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking can be long-term and noisy exposure to those noise levels can affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. With this set up I’m shielding my eyes and my ears. I am keeping the dust from my hair. I am good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently known as a skill saw after the popular name, this may prove to be the most flexible instrument in a startup workshop. In reality, in the hands of an expert, a power hand saw could be employed to build an entire house. Eventually, you are going to want to purchase a table saw, but for the time being, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a funding empowers him to perform cross cuts, tear cuts and even elaborate angle cuts. As mentioned before get an excellent brand saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these tend to cut back and will burn out before you even start your next job. After selecting the right saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws include a starter blade of lesser quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a copy and install a quality blade with carbide teeth. Begin with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add excellent flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This flexible instrument cannot just cut corners. It’s perfect for cutting holes in timber too like handle slots. Eventually, you’re going to want to obtain a band saw. Bandsaws are even more flexible but a quality floor unit can be costly. A jigsaw may be a good stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Buy an range of blades to your own jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase a quality drill that runs on at least 12 volts, nevertheless, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it is in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss over the conventional 3/8 inch model. Through tough lessons learned, I have discovered that purchasing quality, in this case, is more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to have very short run times and have to be recharged often. Their battery life will be poor and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slide frequently. This is 1 annoyance you don’t need on your workshop. Purchase an range of superior carbide tipped drill bits that are stored in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning every drill bit to its potential slot at the holder after each use. Last, get a pair of tough steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a versatile screwdriver, particularly if you picked an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most flexible instrument in the store, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 instrument where most workshop accidents occur. Although the most ordinary, hammer accidents are often of a minor nature, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in price and quality. So what’s the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a good solid joint between the handle and head. The good hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and features a comfortable grip. Many hammers in the high-quality range provide ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with poor joints between the handle and head. The head typically comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Select a name brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce range for overall work and also a smaller finishing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using large framing hammers in the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These types of hammers are more suited to rough framing tasks and therefore are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This little power tool can handle just about any sanding requirements you’ve got as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you will probably update to a floor version disc and belt sander. However, for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up edges, cross cuts and perhaps even limited quantities of surface space. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll discover your palm sander using just a bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and shape rough planks using 100 grit paper and later finish your job with 200 or 300 grit paper. Purchase an assortment of sandpaper sheets with an excess supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll get this grade of paper the most versatile in your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are a must in each workshop. |} Though low tech in theory, these tools enable you to taper edges, flatten high spots and correct any imperfections in timber bits. {Begin with a typical number 4 airplane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll need clamps for glue-ups and simply to hold off your wood pieces as you work on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are costly and it normally takes the beginner woodworker a few years to collect a detailed set of timber clamps. Start with a pair of long”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe was replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure is still the same. Get a pair of the maximum clamps that you can spend. You may contact them for smaller adhesive jobs and enlarge them to their full length for larger projects.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed in the end of your bench is ideal for holding smaller jobs for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking vice with stainless steel clamping surfaces and avoid metal functioning vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices using their timber clamping surfaces may securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the greater vices offer you quick release mechanisms that enabled the user to quickly open and close the limbs with no dull handle turning. The wood beamed surfaces on your vice will occasionally require replacement. I would rather use soft pine in my vices that won’t crush or damage many of the various woods that I utilize. Whether I’m working in soft pine or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape step is going to be one of your most frequently used tools. Purchase a good quality name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually in the 25-foot range. Even though in your store you might not use the tape at these lengths, the bigger tape steps offer more rigid tapes that won’t flop around and slide off the ending of planks. Measuring when you’re by yourself will be a lot simpler, and of course, quality tape steps can endure for several years.

When marking jobs, I prefer a sharp great old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a nice mark without scratching the wood.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Woodworking

Along with stone, clay and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

Among early finds of wooden tools are the worked sticks from Kalambo Falls, Clacton-on-Sea and Lehringen. The spears from Schöningen (Germany) provide some of the first examples of wooden hunting gear. Flint tools were used for carving. Since Neolithic times, carved wooden vessels are known, for example, from the Linear Pottery culture wells at Kückhofen and Eythra.

Examples of Bronze Age wood-carving include tree trunks worked into coffins from northern Germany and Denmark and wooden folding-chairs. The site of Fellbach-Schmieden in Germany has provided fine examples of wooden animal statues from the Iron Age. Wooden idols from the La Tène period are known from a sanctuary at the source of the Seine in France.
