A little home workshop can produce a wide array of simple projects which can allow you to develop your creative and building skills while rewarding you with artistic and practical wood products which you can enjoy and even give away to family and friends.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you should start with, let us talk about where you will do your woodworking, Depending on the size of your house, you may have the ability to create a dedicated space to your woodworking activities. This might be a reserved place in your garage or on your cellar. Sometimes, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to set up your very first shop. A heated shop detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without complex dust control systems, basement workshops will inevitably create dust which travels into the living area of your house. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields located in the cellar draw up dust into the upper levels of the house. Another benefit of detached workshops would be, clearly, the sound level. You can work without bothering the remainder of the household. A fantastic compromise could be the garage of your home.

This might help minimize the problems of dust and sound, however based on where you live, a keyword garage layout may not be sensible during extremes of hot or cold weather.

Finding Woodworking Projects and Plans for Beginners Outdoor Shed Plans

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your development, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes that they include more space to function in. Outdoor Shed Plans if you’re able to have a dedicated spot for a marathon all the greater. Floor gear and bench top equipment can remain in place from project to project. If this setup isn’t hopeless, at least try to make a chair area where equipment could be saved and pulled out as needed. If at all possible plan for inevitable growth as you acquire more tools and equipment. In the beginning, set up a bench area where you can shop and use the majority of your gear, with a temporary expansion of your activities onto the basement or garage floor.

A basic workbench can be constructed from cheap laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The seat needs to be around waist height. This will let you work comfortably while standing. Add a sturdy shelf below the seat to home your hands power tools and a pegboard over the seat to hang other equipment. Install a woodworking vice at one end of your bench on front to maintain tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Outdoor Shed Plans

The scope of your startup equipment will be largely based on your financial plan. Whether you have got big financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring always buy quality gear. If you can afford it, purchase your quality tools at the local building and hardware centre. If your budget is tight purchase quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other regional ads. You will find an abundance of quality gently used tools out there which belong to people who stumbled on that one molding job around the home or received tools as presents that they won’t ever use. You can usually purchase tools for these sellers for less than half the original cost and save even more money should you create a package deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, acquiring tools from private people will take extra time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh out the benefits of traveling across town to save a few extra bucks on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The excess cost of time and travel in these scenarios is usually justified when purchasing large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or high ended tools like surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a visit to your building center could possibly be the best approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled workers worked using a minimum amount of hand gear yet produced sophisticated and complex pieces. Concentrate on developing your skills with your startup set of resources and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you had.
Here’s a listing of the more useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected with eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses which also offer you some side protection to your eyes. Purchase a quality oil collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of thinner plastic pairs will gradually hamper your vision and influence security. Avoid wearing gloves in a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up fast. You can avoid wearing all of them together if you find them uncomfortable.

The next bit of critical safety equipment you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker yet is nearly as critical as eye protection. Woodworking can be long-term and noisy exposure to these noise levels can affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. I’m keeping the dust from my hair. I’m good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently known as a skill saw after the popular brand name, this can end up being the most flexible instrument in a startup workshop. In fact, in the hands of a professional, a power hand saw could be employed to construct an whole house. At some point, you’ll want to purchase a table saw, but for now, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a budget empowers him to do cross cuts, rip cuts and even intricate angle cuts. As mentioned before get a quality manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these are inclined to cut back and will burn out before you even start your second project. After choosing the proper saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a copy and put in an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid . These possess a balanced enamel count which works nicely with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include excellent flexibility to your woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This flexible tool cannot only cut corners. It’s perfect for cutting holes in wood too like handle slots. At some point, you’re going to want to obtain a band saw. Bandsaws are even more flexible but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw can be a good stop gap to the novice woodworker.

Buy an range of blades for your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase a quality drill that runs at 12 volts, nevertheless, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget consider a 1/2 inch toss within the conventional 3/8 inch version. Down the street, the 1/2 inch version will prove to be versatile. Through hard lessons learned, I have found that purchasing quality, in this case, is more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to have very short run times and have to be recharged frequently. Their battery life tends to be bad and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slide often. This is 1 annoyance you don’t need on your workshop. Buy an assortment of quality carbide tipped drill bits that are kept in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning every drill piece to its prospective slot in the holder after every use. Last, get a set of hard steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a flexible screwdriver, especially if you selected an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most flexible instrument in the store, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop accidents occur. Although the most ordinary, hammer accidents are often of a minor nature, varying from bruised palms into the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what’s the difference between a inexpensive hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a good solid joint between the handle and mind. The fantastic hammer is balanced, does not rust and comes with a comfortable handle. Many hammers in the high-quality range offer ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with poor joints between the head and handle. The mind typically comes loose and the instrument becomes useless. Select a title brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce scope for overall work and also a smaller finishing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using large framing hammers at the workshop and any with dimpled head tips. These kinds of hammers are more suited to rough framing tasks and therefore are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Buy a 1/4 sheet palm sander. This little power tool can handle just about any sanding requirements you have as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you’ll probably upgrade to a floor model disk and belt sander. But for now, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up borders, cross cuts and even limited quantities of surface space. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll find your palm sander using a bit of effort can transform rough looking creations into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks using 100 grit paper and after finish your work with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Buy an range of sandpaper sheets using an excess source of 100 grit paper. You’ll find this grade of paper the most versatile on your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are a must in every workshop. |} Though low tech in theory, these tools allow you to taper edges, flatten high spots and fix any imperfections in wood bits. {Begin with a typical number 4 plane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold off your wood bits as you work on them. Unfortunately, good clamps are costly and it usually requires the beginner woodworker a couple of years to collect a detailed set of timber clamps. Start with a pair of extended”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe was replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure is still the same. Receive a set of the maximum clamps that you can spend. You may get in touch with them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their entire length for bigger projects.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed in the end of your bench is perfect for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and prevent metal functioning vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices with their wood clamping surfaces can securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the better vices offer you quick release mechanisms that enable the user to quickly open and close the jaws without tedious handle rotation. The wood beamed surfaces in your vice will periodically require replacement. I would rather use soft walnut in my vices that will not crush or damage many of the different forests that I work with. Whether I am working in soft pine or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape step will be one of your most frequently used tools. Buy a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually from the 25-foot range. Even though in your store you might not use the tape at these lengths, the larger tape steps provide more rigid tapes that won’t flop around and slip off the end of boards. Assessing when you’re by yourself will be a great deal simpler, and of course, quality tape steps can endure for many decades.

When marking projects, I prefer a sharp great old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will generate a wonderful mark without scratching the wood. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require additional sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Shed

A shed is typically a simple, single-story roofed structure in a back garden or on an allotment that is used for storage, hobbies, or as a workshop. Sheds vary considerably in the complexity of their construction and their size, from small open-sided tin-roofed structures to large wood-framed sheds with shingled roofs, windows, and electrical outlets. Sheds used on farms or in industry can be large structures. The main types of shed construction are metal sheathing over a metal frame, plastic sheathing and frame, all-wood construction (the roof may be asphalt shingled or sheathed in tin), and vinyl-sided sheds built over a wooden frame.

A culture of shed enthusiasts exists in several countries for people who enjoy building sheds and spending time in them for relaxation. In Australia and New Zealand there are magazines called The Shed, an association for shed hobbyists (the Australian Men's Shed Association), and a book entitled Men and Sheds.

The simplest and least-expensive sheds are available in kit form. These kits are designed for regular people to be able to assemble themselves using commonly available tools (e.g., screwdriver). Both shed kits and DIY (do-it-yourself) plans are available for wooden and plastic sheds. Sheds are used to store home and garden tools and equipment such as lawn tractors, and gardening supplies. In addition, sheds can be used to store items that are not suitable for indoor storage, such as petrol (gasoline), pesticides, or herbicides. For homes with small gardens or modest storage needs, there are several types of very small sheds. The sheds not only use less ground area but also have a low profile less likely to obstruct the view or clash with the landscaping.
