WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the equipment you ought to start with, let’s discuss where you will perform your woodworking, based on the size of your house, you might be able to create a dedicated space into your woodworking activities. This might be a reserved place in your garage or in your cellar. Sometimes, a detached shed or outbuilding may be ideal to prepare your very first shop. A heated store detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement assignments will inevitably create dust which travels to the living area of your home. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air returns found in the basement draw dust up into the top levels of the house. Another benefit of detached workshops is, of course, the sound level. It’s possible to work without disturbing the rest of the household. A fantastic compromise might be the garage of your property.

This might help decrease the problems of dust and sound, however depending on where you live, a keyword garage layout may not be practical during extremes of cold or hot weather.

Finding Woodworking Projects and Plans for Beginners Outdoor Wood Furniture Plans

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your evolution, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes that they add more space to work in. Outdoor Wood Furniture Plans if you’re able to have a dedicated spot for a workshop all the better. Floor gear and bench top equipment can remain in position from project to project. If this installation isn’t hopeless, at least attempt to make a chair area where equipment could be saved and pulled out as necessary. If at all possible plan for inevitable expansion as you get more tools and equipment. At the beginning, set up a bench area where you can shop and use most of your equipment, using a temporary expansion of your activities onto the basement or garage floor.

A basic workbench can be constructed from inexpensive laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be about waist height. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to house your hands power tools along with a pegboard above the seat to hang additional equipment. Put in a woodworking at one end of the seat on the front to maintain tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Outdoor Wood Furniture Plans

The scope of your start-up equipment will be largely based on your financial plan. Whether you have got large financial resources or you’re starting on a shoestring always buy quality equipment. If you can afford it, then buy your quality tools at your regional construction and hardware centre. If your budget is tight purchase quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other regional advertisements. There are plenty of quality gently used tools out there which belong to individuals who stumbled on that one molding job around the house or obtained tools as gifts which they will never utilize. You can usually buy tools for all these sellers for under half the original price and save even more money should you create a package deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, acquiring tools from private individuals will take extra time and possibly travel expenditures. Weigh out the advantages of traveling across town to save a few added bucks on a cheap piece of gear. The extra cost of travel and time in these situations is generally justified when purchasing large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or high finished tools such as surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your building center may be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled workers worked with a minimal quantity of hand gear yet produced sophisticated and intricate pieces. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your startup set of resources and prevent lamenting about the equipment you wished you’d.
Here’s a listing of the more useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Equipment: Start as expected with eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses that also offer you some side protection for your eyes. Buy a quality acrylic set that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper vinyl pairs will eventually hamper your vision and affect security. Avoid wearing goggles at a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing them all together in the event that you find them uneasy.

The next piece of critical safety gear you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection can be overlooked by the novice woodworker yet is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking can be long-term and noisy exposure to those sound levels may affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. I also find that wearing hearing protection combats exhaustion.

Most employees tire quicker when subjected to high noise levels. Select effective hearing protection which you find comfortable and effective. Last, wear a cap to keep the dust from your hair. With this set up I’m shielding my eyes and my ears. I am keeping the dust from my hair. I am all set!

Power Hand Saw: Often known as a skill saw following the popular brand name, this can end up being the most versatile instrument in a start-up workshop. In fact, in the hands of an expert, a power hand saw could be used to construct an whole property. As mentioned earlier get an excellent manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These tend to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you even start your second job. After selecting the proper saw install a quality blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a copy and install an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Begin with a hybrid . All these possess a balanced tooth count that works nicely with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include great flexibility to your woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This flexible instrument can’t just cut curves. It is perfect for cutting holes in timber too like manage slots. Eventually, you’ll want to get a band saw. Bandsaws are much more flexible but a quality floor unit can be expensive. A jigsaw may be a good stop gap to the novice woodworker.

Purchase an assortment of blades to your own jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: buy a quality drill that runs on at 12 volts, nevertheless, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss over the standard 3/8 inch version. Through hard lessons learned, I have found that purchasing quality, in this scenario, is more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills tend to get very short run times and need to be recharged often. Their battery life tends to be bad and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is one annoyance you do not need on your workshop. Buy an range of superior carbide tipped drill bits which are stored in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning each drill piece to its potential slot in the holder after each use. Lastly, get a set of tough steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a versatile screwdriver, particularly if you picked an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most versatile tool in the store, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} By the way, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop accidents occur. Even though the most frequent, hammer injuries are often of a minor character, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what’s the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a good solid joint between the handle and mind. The good hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and comes with a comfortable grip. Most hammers in the high-quality range provide ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with poor joints between the handle and head. The head usually comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Select a title brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce scope for overall work and a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using big framing hammers in the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These kinds of hammers are more suited to rough framing jobs and are unsuitable in the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This little power tool can manage just about any sanding requirements you have as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you will likely update to a floor version disk and belt sander. But for now, the ever-versatile palm sander can clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited amounts of surface area. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll find your palm sander using a little bit of effort can change rough looking creations into virtual works of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks using 100 grit paper and later finish your work with 200 or 300 grit paper. Purchase an assortment of sandpaper sheets using an extra supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll find that this caliber of paper the most versatile in your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are essential in each workshop. |} Although low tech in theory, these tools enable you to taper borders, sew high stains and correct any imperfections in wood pieces. {Start with a standard amount 4 plane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and just to hold off your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it normally requires the beginner woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a comprehensive set of wood clamps. Begin with a pair of extended”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure remains the same. Get a set of the longest clamps which you could afford. You can contact them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their entire length for larger projects.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed in the end of your seat is ideal for holding smaller jobs for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking with stainless steel clamping surfaces and prevent metal working vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices with their wood clamping surfaces can securely hold wood bits without marring or damaging them. Many of the greater vices offer rapid release mechanisms that enabled the consumer to rapidly open and close the limbs with no dull handle turning. The timber clamping surfaces on your vice will periodically require replacement. I prefer to utilize soft walnut in my vices that will not crush or damage lots of the different forests that I utilize. Whether I am working in soft pine or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape step is going to be one of the most frequently used tools. Buy a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a broad tape usually in the 25-foot selection. Although in your store you may not be using the tape at these lengths, the bigger tape steps offer more rigid tapes which won’t flop around and slide off the ending of boards. Measuring when you’re on your own will be a lot simpler, and of course, quality tape steps can last for many decades.

When marking jobs, I prefer a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a nice mark without scratching the timber. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require extra sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. Teak furniture

Teak wood is used for making boats, furniture, and other things which require resistance to the elements. Teak is used for outdoor furniture but is not recommended for full exposure to sunlight. Being more expensive than most other woods, teak furniture has become something of a status symbol. Not only is it common for a teak bench, chair, or table to last 70 years with the correct care plan, it is also common to pass down such furniture to future generations as an heirloom.

Teak is originally from the teak tree with the Latin name Tectona grandis. The teak tree is common in Southeast Asia. Teak is a hardwood that is particularly resistant to different types of climate, making it suitable for shipbuilding and for furniture.[1] Teak furniture can remain outdoors in any climate year round, and can be left unfinished or protected. Plantation teak wood can be considered eco-friendly due to its long life expectancies. To ensure the reduction of impact teak furniture has to the environment, many forestry companies produce sustainably managed plantation teak.[2][3]

In places and seasons where eating outdoors is common and pleasant, it is common to find wooden dining tables and chairs in gardens, backyards, deck areas, patios, pool yards and sun rooms. Teak is an excellent material for this application, because it will not be broken down in the sun like plastics, it is less prone to the elements like other woods, it is lighter and cooler than iron, and will not easily bend or break like tubular metals.
