Woodworking as a hobby can be among the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever enjoy. You may get started on a shoestring with a minimal amount of tools and equipment. A small home workshop can produce a wide array of simple projects that can allow you to develop your creative and building abilities while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products which you are able to appreciate and also give away to family and friends.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you should begin with, let us talk about where you’ll perform your woodworking, based on the size of your house, you might be able to produce a dedicated space into your woodworking tasks. This might be a reserved spot on your garage or in your cellar. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding may be perfect to prepare your first shop. A heated store detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement workshops will inevitably produce dust that travels to the living area of your home. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields found in the cellar draw dust up into the upper levels of the home. Another advantage of detached workshops would be, of course, the sound level. You can work without bothering the remainder of the household. A good compromise might be the garage of your property.

This might help decrease the difficulties of dust and noise, however depending on where you reside, a keyword garage workshop might not be practical during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is obviously a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your development, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes they add more space to function in. Simple Woodwork Plans if you can have a dedicated place for a workshop all the greater. Floor tools and bench top equipment can remain in position from project to project. If this installation isn’t hopeless, at least try to create a bench area where equipment can be saved and pulled out as necessary. If possible plan for inevitable expansion as you get more tools and gear. At the beginning, set up a bench area where you can shop and use the majority of your equipment, using a temporary expansion of your actions onto the garage or basement floor.

A basic workbench can be constructed from cheap laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench needs to be around waist height. Insert a sturdy shelf below the bench to house your hand power tools along with a pegboard over the bench to hang additional equipment. Install a woodworking at one end of your seat on the front to maintain tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Simple Woodwork Plans

The scope of your start-up equipment will be largely based on your financial plan. Whether you’ve got big financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring always buy quality equipment. If you can afford it, then buy your quality tools at your regional construction and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from others through Kijiji or alternative regional ads. There are plenty of quality lightly used tools out there which belong to people who embarked on that 1 molding job around the home or obtained tools as gifts which they won’t ever use. You can usually purchase tools for all these sellers for under half the initial price and save even more money if you create a package deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, getting tools from private people will require additional time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh the benefits of traveling around town to save a couple added dollars on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The extra cost of travel and time in these scenarios is usually justified when buying large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or high ended tools like surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your building center could possibly be the best approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled workers worked with a minimum quantity of hand gear yet generated sophisticated and complex bits. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your startup set of tools and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you’d.
Here is a listing of the more useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Equipment: Start as expected with eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses which also offer you some side protection to your eyes. Purchase a quality acrylic set that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper plastic pairs will gradually hamper your vision and influence safety. Avoid wearing goggles in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing them all together in the event that you find them uneasy.

The next piece of crucial safety gear you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking can be noisy and long-term exposure to those sound levels can affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. I also find that wearing hearing protection combats exhaustion.

Most employees tire faster when subjected to elevated sound levels. Select powerful hearing protection which you find comfortable and effective. Last, put on a cap to keep the dust from your hair. With this setup I’m shielding my eyes and my ears. I’m keeping the dust out of my hair. I am good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Frequently referred to as a skill saw following the favorite brand name, this may end up being the most flexible tool in a startup workshop. In fact, at the hands of an expert, a power hand saw can be used to construct an entire property. At some point, you are going to want to buy a table saw, but for the time being, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a funding enables him to do cross cuts, tear cuts and even elaborate angle cuts. As mentioned before get a quality brand saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These are inclined to cut back and will burn out before you start your second project. After choosing the proper saw install a quality blade. Most saws include a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a backup and put in a quality blade with carbide teeth. Begin with a hybrid .

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add great versatility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This versatile tool can’t just cut corners. It is ideal for cutting holes in wood too like manage slots. Eventually, you’ll want to obtain a ring saw. Bandsaws are even more flexible but a excellent floor unit can be expensive. A jigsaw can be a good stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Purchase an assortment of blades for your own jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: buy a quality drill that runs at 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss over the conventional 3/8 inch model. Through tough lessons learned, I have found that buying quality, in this scenario, is much more critical than ever. Cheaper drills tend to get very short run times and need to be recharged often. Their long-term battery life tends to be poor and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slip frequently. This is one annoyance you do not need on your workshop. Buy an range of superior carbide tipped drill bits that are stored in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning each drill bit to its potential slot in the holder after every use. Last, get a pair of tough steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a versatile screwdriver, especially if you picked an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most versatile instrument in the store, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 instrument where most workshop injuries occur. Although the most ordinary, hammer accidents are often of a minor character, varying from bruised palms into the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in quality and price. So what’s the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a good solid joint between the handle and mind. The fantastic hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and features a comfortable handle. Many hammers in the high tech range provide metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers usually have wood handles with inferior joints between the handle and head. The mind typically comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a title brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce range for overall work and a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using large framing hammers in the workshop and any with dimpled mind tips. These types of hammers are more appropriate to rough framing jobs and are unsuitable in the workshop.

Palm Sander: Buy a 1/4 sheet . This tiny power tool can manage pretty much any trimming requirements that you have as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you’ll probably update to a floor version disc and belt sander. But for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up edges, cross cuts and perhaps even limited amounts of surface space. As you embark on the first few projects you’ll find that your palm sander with a bit of effort can transform rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and form rough boards with 100 grit paper and after finish your work with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Buy an assortment of sandpaper sheets using an extra supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll get that this caliber of paper that the most versatile on your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are a must in every workshop. |} Though low tech in theory, these tools allow you to taper borders, flatten high spots and fix any imperfections in wood pieces. {Begin with a typical amount 4 airplane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold down your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are costly and it normally takes the beginner woodworker a couple of years to collect a detailed set of wood clamps. Start with a set of extended”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure is still the same. Get a pair of the maximum clamps that you can spend. You can get in touch with them for smaller adhesive jobs and expand them to their full length for larger projects.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed in the end of the seat is perfect for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and avoid metal functioning vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices with their timber clamping surfaces may securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the better vices offer quick release mechanisms that enable the consumer to rapidly open and close the limbs with no dull handle turning. The timber beamed surfaces in your vice will periodically require replacement. I prefer to use soft pine in my vices which won’t crush or damage many of the various forests that I utilize. Whether I’m working in soft pine or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape step is going to be one of your most frequently used tools. Purchase a good excellent name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually from the 25-foot range. Even though in your store you may not be using the tape in these lengths, the larger tape steps offer more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slide off the ending of boards. Assessing when you are by yourself will be a great deal easier, and naturally, quality tape measures can last for several decades.

When marking projects, I favor a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will generate a nice mark without scratching the timber.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Workbench (woodworking)

A workbench is a table used by woodworkers to hold workpieces while they are worked by other tools. There are many styles of woodworking benches, each reflecting the type of work to be done or the craftsman's way of working. Most benches have two features in common: they are heavy and rigid enough to keep still while the wood is being worked, and there is some method for holding the work in place at a comfortable position and height so that the worker is free to use both hands on the tools. The main thing that distinguishes benches is the way in which the work is held in place. Most benches have more than one way to do this, depending on the operation being performed.

Probably the oldest and most basic method of holding the work is a planing stop or dog ear, which is simply a peg or small piece of wood or metal that stands just above the surface at the end of the bench top. The work is placed on the bench with the end pushed against the stop. The force of the planing keeps the board in place, so long as the force is always toward the stop. Planing against a stop gives the woodworker good feedback - they can tell a lot about what is going on just by the pressure, force and balance required. A stop can take the form of a batten attached to the end of the bench, or it can be adjustable, able to be moved up and down according to the size of the work - or pushed down below the surface when not needed. A simple bench dog can serve as a planing stop.

Another ancient method of holding the work is the hold fast or holdfast. A holdfast looks like a shepherd's crook. The shank goes into a hole in the bench top and the tip of the hook is pressed against the work from above. The holdfast is set by rapping the top with a mallet, and released by hitting the back side. A good holdfast works remarkably well, and is inexpensive and easy to install.
