Woodworking as a hobby can be among the most rewarding experiences you will ever appreciate. You can begin on a shoestring with a minimum number of gear and equipment. A little home workshop can produce a wide array of simple projects which can help you develop your creative and building skills while rewarding you with artistic and practical wood products which you can enjoy and also give away to friends and family.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you ought to begin with, let us discuss where you will perform your woodworking, Depending on the dimensions of your house, you might be able to create a dedicated space to your woodworking tasks. This might be a reserved place on your garage or on your basement. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to prepare your very first shop. A heated store detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without complex dust control methods, basement workshops will inevitably create dust that travels into the living area of your house. This is particularly true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields found in the basement draw up dust into the upper levels of the house. Another advantage of detached workshops is, clearly, the noise level. It’s possible to work without disturbing the rest of the family. A fantastic compromise could be the garage of your property.

This might help minimize the difficulties of dust and noise, however depending on where you reside, a keyword garage workshop might not be sensible during extremes of cold or hot weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your development, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes they add more space to work in. Small Wood Table Plans if you’re able to have a dedicated spot for a workshop all the better. Floor tools and bench top gear can stay in place from project to project. If this setup is not impossible, at least try to make a chair area where equipment can be saved and pulled out as necessary. If possible plan for inevitable growth as you acquire more tools and gear. In the beginning, establish a seat area where you are able to shop and use the majority of your gear, with a temporary expansion of your activities onto the garage or basement floor.

A rudimentary workbench could be constructed from inexpensive spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be about waist height. This will enable you to work comfortably while standing. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to home your hand power tools along with a pegboard over the bench to hang other equipment. Install a woodworking vice at one end of the bench on front to maintain small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Small Wood Table Plans

The reach of your start-up equipment will be largely based on your financial plan. Whether you have got big financial resources or you’re starting on a shoestring consistently purchase quality equipment. If you can afford it, buy your quality tools in the local construction and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from the others through Kijiji or alternative local advertisements. There are plenty of quality lightly used programs out there that belong to individuals who stumbled on that one molding project around the home or received tools as presents that they will never utilize. You can usually buy tools for all these sellers for less than half of the initial cost and save even more money if you create a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, getting tools from private individuals will require additional time and possibly travel expenses. Weigh out the advantages of traveling around town to save a few added bucks on a inexpensive piece of gear. The extra cost of travel and time in these scenarios is generally justified when purchasing large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or large finished tools such as surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your construction center may be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient workers worked with a minimum quantity of hand equipment yet produced sophisticated and complex bits. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your start-up set of resources and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you had.
Here is a listing of the more useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated with eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses which also offer some side protection to your eyes. Buy a quality oil collection that’ll be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of thinner plastic pairs will gradually impair your vision and influence safety. Avoid wearing goggles at a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing all of them together in the event that you find them uncomfortable.

The next piece of critical safety gear you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection can be overlooked by the novice woodworker however is nearly as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking may be noisy and long-term exposure to these sound levels can affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. I prefer a simple ball cap with my ear muffs and eye protection. I’m keeping the dust from my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Often referred to as a skill saw after the favorite brand name, this may prove to be the most flexible instrument in a start-up workshop. In reality, in the hands of a professional, a power hand saw could be used to construct an whole property. As mentioned before get a quality manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these are inclined to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you even start your second project. After choosing the right saw install an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lesser quality even if they are a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a copy and put in a quality blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will add excellent flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This versatile instrument can’t just cut corners. It’s ideal for cutting holes in wood too like handle slots. Eventually, you’ll want to get a band saw. Bandsaws are much more flexible but a excellent floor unit could be costly. A jigsaw can be a good stop gap to the novice woodworker.

Purchase an assortment of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill that runs on at 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget consider a 1/2 inch chuck over the conventional 3/8 inch version. Through tough lessons learned, I have found that buying quality, in this scenario, is more critical than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to get very short run times and need to be recharged frequently. Their battery life will be poor and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slide frequently. This is one annoyance you don’t need on your workshop. Buy an assortment of quality carbide tipped drill bits which are stored in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Make a habit of returning each drill piece to its potential slot at the holder after every use. Last, get a set of hard steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a versatile screwdriver, particularly if you picked an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most versatile tool in the store, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 instrument where most workshop accidents happen. Even though the most ordinary, hammer accidents are often of a minor character, varying from bruised palms into the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in price and quality. So what is the difference between a inexpensive hammer and a costly hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and mind. The good hammer is balanced, does not rust and features a comfortable handle. Many hammers in the high-quality range offer ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood handles with poor joints between the head and handle. The head typically comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a name brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce scope for general work and a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using large framing hammers in the workshop and any with dimpled head tips. These types of hammers are more appropriate for rough framing tasks and are unsuitable in the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This little power tool can manage just about any trimming requirements that you’ve got as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you’ll probably update to a floor model disc and belt sander. But for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up borders, cross cuts and even limited quantities of surface space. As you embark on the first few projects you’ll discover that your palm sander using just a little bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual functions of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks using 100 grit paper and later finish your job with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Purchase an range of sandpaper sheets with an extra source of 100 grit paper. You’ll find that this grade of paper that the most versatile on your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are a must in each workshop. |} Although low tech in concept, these tools allow you to taper borders, flatten high spots and fix any imperfections in timber bits. {Begin with a typical amount 4 plane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll want pliers for glue-ups and just to hold down your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are costly and it normally takes the beginner woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a detailed set of wood clamps. Start with a pair of extended”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, but the structure is still the same. Get a pair of the maximum clamps which you can afford. You may get in touch with them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their entire length for bigger jobs.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed in the end of your bench is ideal for holding smaller tasks for sanding, filing, and hole cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking with stainless steel clamping surfaces and prevent metal functioning vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices using their timber clamping surfaces can securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. Many of the greater vices offer you rapid release mechanisms that enable the user to quickly open and close the jaws without tedious handle turning. The wood clamping surfaces in your vice will periodically need replacement. I prefer to use soft pine in my vices which won’t crush or damage lots of the various forests that I utilize. Whether I’m working in walnut or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape measure is going to be among the most often used tools. Buy a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually in the 25-foot selection. Even though in your shop you may not use the tape in these spans, the bigger tape measures provide more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slide off the ending of planks. Assessing when you are by yourself will be a great deal simpler, and of course, quality tape measures can endure for many years.

When marking projects, I favor a sharp great old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pen will produce a nice mark without scratching the timber.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Lofting

Lofting is a drafting technique (sometimes using mathematical tables) whereby curved lines are generated, to be used in plans for streamlined objects such as aircraft and boats. The lines may be drawn on wood and the wood then cut for advanced woodworking. The technique can be as simple as bending a flexible object, such as a long strip of thin wood or thin plastic, so that it passes over three non-linear points, and scribing the resultant curved line; or as elaborate as plotting the line using computers or mathematical tables.

Lofting is particularly useful in boat building, when it is used to draw and cut pieces for hulls and keels. These are usually curved, often in three dimensions. Loftsmen at the mould lofts of shipyards were responsible for taking the dimensions and details from drawings and plans, and translating this information into templates, battens, ordinates, cutting sketches, profiles, margins and other data.[1] From the early 1970s onward computer-aided design (CAD) became normal for the shipbuilding design and lofting process.[2]

As ship design evolved from craft to science, designers learned various ways to produce long curves on a flat surface. Generating and drawing such curves became a part of ship lofting; "lofting" means drawing full-sized patterns, so called because it was often done in large, lightly constructed mezzanines or lofts above the factory floor. When aircraft design progressed beyond the stick-and-fabric boxes of its first decade of existence, the practice of lofting moved naturally into the aeronautical realm. As the storm clouds of World War II gathered in Europe, a US aircraft company, North American Aviation, took the practice into the purely mathematical realm. One of that war's outstanding warplanes, the North American P-51 Mustang, was designed using mathematical charts and tables rather than lofting tables.[6]
