Woodwork Crafts – The Beginners Guide To Woodworking Toy Box Woodworking Plans

Woodworking as a hobby can be among the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever appreciate. You can get started on a shoestring with a minimal amount of gear and equipment. A small home workshop can produce a broad variety of simple projects which will help you develop your creative and building skills while rewarding you with artistic and practical wood products which you can appreciate and even give away to family and friends.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you ought to start with, let’s talk about where you’ll perform your woodworking, Depending on the size of your home, you might be able to create a dedicated space into your woodworking activities. This may be a reserved spot in your garage or on your basement. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding may be ideal to set up your very first store. A heated shop detached from your house offers one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without sophisticated dust control systems, basement workshops will inevitably create dust which travels to the living area of your home. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air returns found in the basement draw dust up into the top levels of the home. Another advantage of detached workshops is, clearly, the noise level. It’s possible to work without bothering the rest of the household. A fantastic compromise might be the garage of your home.

This might help minimize the problems of dust and sound, however based on where you reside, a keyword garage layout may not be sensible during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your development, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes they add more space to function in. Toy Box Woodworking Plans if you can have a dedicated spot for a workshop all the greater. Floor gear and bench top equipment can remain in place from project to project. If this setup is not hopeless, at least attempt to make a chair area where equipment could be stored and pulled out as necessary. If possible plan for inevitable expansion as you get more tools and gear. In the start, set up a seat area where you can store and use most of your equipment, with a temporary expansion of your actions onto the garage or basement floor.

A basic workbench can be constructed from inexpensive spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The seat needs to be around waist height. This will enable you to work comfortably while standing. Add a sturdy shelf below the seat to house your hands power tools along with a pegboard over the bench to hang additional equipment. Install a woodworking at one end of your bench on front to maintain small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Toy Box Woodworking Plans

The scope of your start-up equipment will be mostly based on your financial plan. Whether you’ve got big financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring consistently purchase quality gear. If you can afford it, then buy your quality tools at the local building and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other regional ads. You will find an abundance of quality gently used programs out there which belong to individuals who stumbled on that one molding project around the home or obtained tools as presents which they won’t ever use. You can usually purchase tools for all these sellers for under half of the initial cost and save even more money should you make a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, acquiring tools from private people will take extra time and perhaps travel expenditures. Weigh the benefits of traveling around town to save a few extra dollars on a inexpensive piece of gear. The extra cost of time and travel in these situations is usually justified when purchasing large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or large ended tools like surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your construction center may be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled workers worked using a minimum quantity of hand gear yet produced sophisticated and complex pieces. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your start-up set of tools and avoid lamenting about the equipment you wished you’d.
Here’s a checklist of the more useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected with eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses which also offer some side protection to your eyes. Purchase a quality acrylic collection that’ll be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper plastic pairs will eventually impair your vision and influence security. Avoid wearing gloves at a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up fast. You can avoid wearing all of them together in the event that you find them uncomfortable.

The next bit of crucial safety equipment you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking may be noisy and long-term exposure to these sound levels may affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. I prefer a very simple ball cap along with my ear muffs and eye protection. With this setup I’m shielding my eyes and my ears. I’m keeping the dust from my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Often known as a skill saw following the favorite name, this may prove to be the most flexible instrument in a start-up workshop. In reality, at the hands of a professional, a power hand saw could be used to construct an whole property. As mentioned earlier get an excellent brand saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these are inclined to cut back and will burn out before you start your second project. After choosing the right saw install a quality blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a backup and install a quality blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade. All these have a balanced tooth count that works nicely with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include excellent versatility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This flexible instrument cannot just cut curves. It is perfect for cutting holes in timber too like manage slots. Eventually, you’re going to want to get a band saw. Bandsaws are even more flexible but a excellent floor unit could be costly. A jigsaw may be a fantastic stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Buy an assortment of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill which runs at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget consider a 1/2 inch toss over the standard 3/8 inch version. Down the road, the 1/2 inch version will end up being versatile. Through tough lessons learned, I have discovered that buying quality, in this scenario, is more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to get very short run times and need to be recharged frequently. Their long-term battery life will be bad and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is 1 annoyance you do not want in your workshop. Buy an range of quality carbide tipped drill bits that are kept in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning each drill piece to its potential slot in the holder after every use. Lastly, get a pair of tough steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a flexible screwdriver, especially if you picked an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most versatile instrument in the shop, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop injuries happen. Although the most frequent, hammer injuries are usually of a minor character, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in quality and price. So what is the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and mind. The fantastic hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and comes with a comfortable grip. Many hammers in the high tech range provide metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with inferior joints between the head and handle. The head usually comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a name brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce range for general work and a smaller finishing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using big framing hammers in the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These kinds of hammers are more suited to rough framing jobs and therefore are unsuitable in the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This tiny power tool can handle just about any sanding requirements you have as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you’ll probably update to a floor model disc and belt sander. But for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited quantities of surface space. As you embark on the first few projects you’ll discover that your palm sander with just a little bit of effort can change rough looking creations into virtual works of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks with 100 grit paper and after finish your job with 200 or 300 grit paper. Purchase an range of sandpaper sheets using an excess supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll get that this grade of paper that the most versatile in your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are a must in every workshop. |} Though low tech in concept, these tools enable you to taper edges, flatten high spots and fix any imperfections in wood bits. {Start with a standard amount 4 plane and an range of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will need clamps for glue-ups and simply to hold down your wood bits as you operate on them. Unfortunately, good clamps are costly and it usually requires the beginner woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a comprehensive set of timber clamps. Begin with a pair of long”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe has been replaced with extended steel shafts, however, the structure is still the same. Receive a set of the longest clamps that you can afford. You may contact them for smaller adhesive jobs and expand them to their full length for bigger jobs.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed at the end of your bench is ideal for holding smaller jobs for sanding, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and prevent metal working vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices using their timber clamping surfaces may securely hold wood bits without marring or damaging them. Many of the better vices offer rapid release mechanisms that enable the user to rapidly open and close the limbs without dull handle rotation. The wood beamed surfaces on your vice will occasionally need replacement. I would rather utilize soft walnut in my vices which will not crush or damage many of the different forests that I utilize. Whether I am working in walnut or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape step will be among the most often used tools. Buy a good excellent name brand tape measure with a wide tape usually from the 25-foot selection. Although in your store you may not use the tape at these spans, the larger tape measures offer more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slip off the end of planks. Measuring when you are on your own will be a lot easier, and naturally, quality tape measures can endure for many years.

When marking jobs, I favor a sharp great old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pen will generate a wonderful mark without scratching the wood. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require extra sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. His career at American Woodmark started in IT Development and IT Project Management before transitioning into RFID. He said  is excited to share the unique and extensive application of RFID at IWF.

The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

James Krenov

Jim Krenov was born on October 31, 1920, in the village of Uelen, Siberia, the only child of Dimitri and Julia Krenov. He and his family left Russia the following year, and after some time in Shanghai, China, they moved to a remote village in Alaska, where his parents worked as teachers. They lived in Alaska for seven years. Jim remembered airplane drops of goods and supplies onto the snow for the villagers. In one of those bundles was a good steel jack-knife. "From the time I was 6, I was making my own toys with the jackknife," Jim told. "It was a joy to me that I could rely on my hands and my eyes to produce things." Eventually, the family moved to Seattle. Jim spent his teen years there, where he developed a love for the sea and began building model boats at first, graduating to sailboats before long. As a young man during World War II, Krenov served as a Russian interpreter for the military when Russian ships docked in Seattle. He also worked for a ship chandler and spent a great deal of time surrounded by boats. It influenced his aesthetic. He loved the lines of boats: "There's hardly a straight line on them, but there's harmony. People think right angles produce harmony, but they don't. They produce sleep," Krenov said.

In 1947 Jim and his mother moved to Europe. In Paris, in 1949, he met his future wife, Britta. They were married on March 2, 1951. Jim and Britta traveled together in Italy and France, and spent many summers in the mountains of Sweden where they liked to hike and he fished for trout in the mountain streams. Always a writer, Krenov published several articles and a novel chronicling these travels.

A friend in Sweden got Krenov a job building wooden architectural models for a restaurant designer; later Krenov got himself a spot at the Stockholm design school run by Carl Malmsten, considered the father of Scandinavian furniture design. He attended the famous Malmsten school for two years and then struck out on his own, keeping a shop in his basement. Toiling anonymously for years, he gradually built a reputation for his simple design. Once established as a master woodworker, Krenov also began sharing his expertise. "Krenov really helped re-create an interest in fine woodworking that had largely died out by the 1950s," says Frank Ramsay, president of the Bay Area Woodworkers Association, "Such a change from the 'make a box, cover it with plywood and paint it' era of the 1960s." Over time, Krenov received numerous requests to document his design philosophy in book format. In 1976, Krenov's first book, "A Cabinetmaker's Notebook" was published. The positive response to that first book surprised Krenov, and he ended up writing four more books including a final book that showcased the work of his students,"With Wakened Hands."
