WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you should start with, let’s talk about where you’ll perform your woodworking, Depending on the size of your house, you may be able to create a dedicated space to your woodworking activities. This may be a reserved place on your garage or in your basement. Sometimes, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to prepare your very first shop. A heated shop detached from your house provides one distinct advantage: better dust control. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement assignments will inevitably create dust that travels into the living area of your house. This is particularly true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields located in the cellar draw dust up into the upper levels of the house. Another advantage of detached workshops would be, of course, the sound level. You can work without disturbing the remainder of the family. A fantastic compromise could be the garage of your property.

This can help minimize the problems of dust and noise, however based on where you live, a keyword garage workshop might not be sensible during extremes of hot or cold weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a challenge for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your evolution, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes that they add more space to function in. Wood Shed Plans Free if you’re able to have a dedicated spot for a workshop all the greater. Floor tools and bench top equipment can remain in place from project to project. If this installation isn’t hopeless, at least try to make a chair area where equipment can be saved and pulled out as necessary. If possible plan for inevitable growth as you acquire more tools and gear. At the beginning, set up a seat area where you can store and use most of your equipment, using a temporary expansion of your activities onto the basement or garage floor.

A rudimentary workbench could be constructed from cheap laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be about waist height. Insert a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to home your hands power tools and a pegboard over the seat to hang other equipment. Put in a woodworking vice at one end of the bench on front to maintain tiny workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Wood Shed Plans Free

The reach of your start-up equipment will be mostly based on your financial plan. Whether you’ve got large financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring consistently purchase quality gear. If you can afford it, buy your quality tools in your regional construction and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from others through Kijiji or other regional advertisements. You will find plenty of quality lightly used programs out there which belong to people who stumbled on that one molding project around the home or obtained tools as gifts that they won’t ever use. You can usually buy tools for these sellers for under half the initial cost and save even more money should you create a package deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, acquiring tools from private individuals will require extra time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh the advantages of traveling around town to save a couple extra bucks on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The extra cost of travel and time in these situations is usually justified when purchasing large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or large ended tools such as surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your building center could possibly be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled workers worked using a minimum amount of hand equipment yet produced sophisticated and complex pieces. Concentrate on developing your abilities with your start-up set of tools and avoid lamenting about the equipment you wished you had.
Here’s a listing of the more useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated with eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses which also offer some side protection to your eyes. Purchase a quality oil collection that’ll be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper vinyl pairs will eventually impair your vision and affect safety. Avoid wearing goggles in a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up fast. You can avoid wearing them all together in the event that you find them uncomfortable.

The next bit of crucial safety gear that you’ll need entails ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking may be long-term and noisy exposure to those noise levels can affect hearing and lead to tinnitus and other hearing losses. I am keeping the dust out of my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Often known as a skill saw following the favorite brand name, this can end up being the most flexible tool in a startup workshop. In reality, in the hands of a professional, a power hand saw could be used to build an whole property. As mentioned before get an excellent manufacturer saw. Avoid cheap unknown brands. All these tend to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you start your second project. After choosing the right saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lesser quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a backup and put in an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Begin with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include excellent flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This versatile tool can’t just cut curves. It is ideal for cutting holes in timber also like manage slots. Eventually, you’ll want to obtain a ring saw. Bandsaws are much more flexible but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw can be a good stop gap to the novice woodworker.

Buy an assortment of blades for your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: buy a quality drill which runs on at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it is in your budget consider a 1/2 inch toss over the standard 3/8 inch model. Down the road, the 1/2 inch version will prove to be versatile. Through tough lessons learned, I have discovered that buying quality, in this case, is more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills tend to have very short run times and need to be recharged frequently. Their battery life tends to be bad and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is 1 annoyance you don’t need on your workshop. Buy an assortment of quality carbide tipped drill bits that are kept in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning each drill piece to its prospective slot at the holder after every use. Last, get a pair of hard steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a flexible screwdriver, particularly if you selected an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer stays as the most versatile instrument in the store, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} By the way, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop injuries happen. Although the most ordinary, hammer accidents are often of a minor nature, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in price and quality. So what’s the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and mind. The fantastic hammer is balanced, does not rust and features a comfortable grip. Most hammers in the high-quality range provide metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers usually have wood handles with poor joints between the handle and head. The mind usually comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a name brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce scope for general work and a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using big framing hammers at the workshop and some other with dimpled head tips. These types of hammers are more appropriate to rough framing jobs and are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This tiny power tool can handle just about any trimming requirements that you have as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you will likely upgrade to a floor model disk and belt sander. But for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up edges, cross cuts and perhaps even limited amounts of surface area. As you embark on your first few projects you might discover your palm sander with a bit of effort can change rough looking creations into virtual functions of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and shape rough boards using 100 grit paper and after finish your work with 200 or 300 grit paper. Buy an assortment of sandpaper sheets with an excess supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll find that this caliber of paper the most versatile in your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are a must in each workshop. |} Although low tech in concept, these tools enable you to taper borders, sew high stains and correct any imperfections in wood pieces. {Begin with a standard amount 4 plane and an range of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll need clamps for glue-ups and simply to hold off your wood bits as you work on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it usually requires the novice woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a comprehensive set of wood clamps. Begin with a set of extended”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe was replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure remains the same. Receive a set of the longest clamps that you could spend. You may get in touch with them for smaller glue jobs and expand them to their entire length for bigger jobs.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed in the end of the seat is ideal for holding smaller tasks for sanding, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking vice with stainless steel clamping surfaces and avoid metal functioning vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices using their wood clamping surfaces can securely hold wood bits without marring or damaging them. Many of the greater vices offer quick release mechanisms that enable the user to rapidly open and close the jaws without tedious handle turning. The wood clamping surfaces on your vice will periodically require replacement. I would rather utilize soft pine in my vices that won’t crush or damage lots of the various forests that I utilize. Whether I am working in soft pine or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape step will be one of the most frequently used tools. Purchase a good excellent name brand tape measure with a broad tape usually from the 25-foot selection. Although in your store you might not use the tape in these spans, the larger tape steps offer more rigid tapes which will not flop around and slide off the end of boards. Measuring when you are by yourself will be a great deal simpler, and of course, quality tape steps can endure for many decades.

When marking projects, I prefer a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a wonderful mark without scratching the wood. Avoid oversized carpenter’s pencils. Their big flat leads are simply too rough for precise measurement in the workshop.

Other Tool and Materials: Here are a couple other useful tools to round out your starter workshop: Buy a T-square, place square and rate square. These inexpensive tools can help you in marking the ideal angles as well as compound angles. Get the number three and two Robertson set. I find that the Robertson format works great for most woodworking jobs and is the most compatible with a drill powered pieces. Last, get a pair of 12-inch wood documents. The cost of adhesive through all of your projects is a minor cost consideration. Therefore, it is sensible to go with the best. I have also found over time that I receive the best results with both indoor and outdoor projects once I use quality outdoor grade glue. These resin-based compounds unlike conventional water-based wood adhesive, won’t break down and neglect with moisture.

CONCLUSION, Wood Shed Plans Free

The peaceful gratification of woodworking is a wonderful adventure in this era of rushed lives, smartphones, and time-starved livelihood. With a minimal investment in the most basic equipment and tools, anyone can learn the profitable abilities of his time-tested hobby and enjoy job after project!

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. His session is part of the all-day Woodworking Network Leadership Forum.  The Leadership Forum is sponsored by J B Cutting.

At American Woodmark Corporation, Nisiobincki manages the RFID Program from a corporate level. He works closely with  the organization's manufacturing plants to understand processes, identify key issues, and develop unique and innovative RFID technology solutions to relieve those issues. The targeted audience for this session includes: C-Level management, rising stars and innovators from across the wood products industry including CEO’s, owners, team managers and entrepreneurs and investors.  Registration for the Woodworking Network Leadership Forum is $395 until August 1 and $450 thereafter.  Lunch and admission to the Leadership Reception following the symposia are included.

Shed

A shed is typically a simple, single-story roofed structure in a back garden or on an allotment that is used for storage, hobbies, or as a workshop. Sheds vary considerably in their size and complexity of construction, from simple open-sided ones designed to cover bicycles or garden items to large wood-framed structures with shingled roofs, windows, and electrical outlets. Sheds used on farms or in industry can be large structures. The main types of shed construction are metal sheathing over a metal frame, plastic sheathing and frame, all-wood construction (the roof may be asphalt shingled or sheathed in tin), and vinyl-sided sheds built over a wooden frame. Small sheds may include a wooden or plastic floor, while more permanent ones may be built on a concrete pad or foundation. Sheds may be lockable to deter theft or entry by children, domestic animals, wildlife, etc.

A culture of shed enthusiasts exists in several countries for people who enjoy building sheds and spending time in them for relaxation. In Australia and New Zealand there are magazines called The Shed, an association for shed hobbyists (the Australian Men's Shed Association), and a book entitled Men and Sheds.

Depending on the region and type of use, a shed may also be called a shack, outhouse, or "outbuilding". Sheds may be classified as "accessory buildings" in municipal bylaws which may regulate their size, appearance, and distance from the principal building and boundary lines.
