One of the most important questions, when addressing technology within the context of Industry 4.0 is, “Are the installed technology and infrastructure able to network and in alignment with the networking requirements of the fulfillment model?” 
    Before Industry 4.0, technology needed to be flexible, cost-effective, and fast. Machines were island solutions. Machines were linked to form machine groups, but essentially, they were still island solutions. Now, with the next step forward, machines need to be “all of the above” and must be able to communicate with other machines and business software and run autonomously with very little intervention by operators.  Only this way can companies respond to the increasing shortage of qualified labor and meet their strategic growth targets.
     
    You do not have to invest in the highest degree of integrated and automated equipment all the time. The technology applied needs to match the business requirements. Economic rules still apply in the world of Industry 4.0. As you push automation, it must remain economically viable. Your investment strategy however must have a strong focus on the networking ability of the equipment. The more leading-edge technology you apply, the more you might have to accept a longer payback period. Therefore, it is also very important to have a strategy in place to grow into automation.
     
    One of the many challenges for the industry is the lack of universal standards and communication protocols between the different machine suppliers. Not every machine can communicate with other machines or software. The compatibility and ability to integrate must be key in the selection process. 
     
    In your overall investment strategy, you create the ideal scenario. Incremental investments will have to fit this future plan, even if you do not have the means to interconnect them currently. But successfully implementing highly automated and integrated equipment is more than purchasing a piece of equipment. The company’s support structure must be ramped up as well in order to fully utilize the potential of the equipment. 
     
    Engineering support
    The engineering staff needs to be trained in automated processes and equipment. More and more, engineering will be driving the efficiencies of the processes and the installed equipment. They need to understand not only the equipment, but also the other inputs that make the automation successful.
     
    Maintenance
    With an increased level of technology, the reliance level of the equipment needs to increase as well. We can not rely on Corrective Maintenance - a system where “we repair it when it breaks down."  Even a system of Preventative Maintenance needs to be upgraded to Predictive Maintenance. Defined processes need to be in place to minimize and/or prevent unplanned equipment stoppages and breakdowns.
    Many tools are available and need to be used and developed within the company. Some of the tools are:
    • Vibration analysis 
    • Acoustical analysis (sonic and/or ultrasonic level)
    • Sonic monitoring
    • Infrared monitoring and analysis
    • Oil analysis  
     Industry 4.0 supports maintenance efforts with vision systems whereby maintenance operators can communicate with technical support staff from the machine suppliers (seeing the same thing). 
    In the future, machines will recognize the need for a component exchange, order the machine component, and indicate the need for the replacement autonomously.
     
    Tool Management
    Leading edge technology also includes leading edge tooling. Industry 4.0 will also have a major impact on tools. Tracking tools and their usage easily provides data to optimise their use and provides feedback for improvements. The collected data will be used to enhance the specification, sharpening cycles, operating data – the entire life cycle of tools is being digitized. 
    With the amount of data provided by sensors in the machine, tool suppliers can be integrated in the management of tools. There are already some developments, where instead of selling tools to the manufacturer, tool suppliers will provide tools on a charge-per-use basis. 
    Infrastructure
    Dust collection, compressed air, heating/cooling, IT network, and building management are all part of the company’s infrastructure. 
    Dust Collection
    Dust collection is connected to all the machines electronically that produce dust and chips. The data from the machines (i.e. on/off, chip producing = tools engaged) is communicated to the dust collector, which then regulates the appropriate exhaust volume (CFM) by controlling the RPM of the exhaust motors. The disposal system is connected via text or email to inform the truck driver of a full disposal bin. Big data is collected for analysis to further reduce the energy consumption of the system and optimize the maintenance. 
    Compressed Air
    The cost of compressed air is traditionally ignored. Compressors are running full-time, and airlines are leaking. Energy reviews on compressed air systems show that the energy consumption cost, as part of the total cost of compressed air over the lifetime of a compressor (i.e. 10 years) is a multiple of the initial investment cost. Sensors and gauges can again provide data for analysis and control of the equipment. The additional information provided by this Industry 4.0 technology will lead to better equipment utilization and operating cost reduction.
    Heating/Cooling and Lighting 
    The best comparison here is the advances we see in our homes. We can control temperature and lights with our smartphones. If it is beneficial in relatively small residential homes, consider how much more will this improve the operation costs in industrial buildings.
     
    The factory of the future is fully networked. Equipment, sensors and workers need to have access to, and share, information.
     
    Where Do You Start?
    It is rather clear that Industry 4.0 cannot be purchased with deep pockets and a few purchase orders alone. There is also no one-size-fits-all roadmap for woodworking companies. The reality is that the details are important, and details can be defined only if you have a team that understands the subject.
    Reading up on the subject and visiting tradeshows are excellent starting points. One fact becomes clear, the Smart Factory of the future requires cooperation of team members within manufacturing, operations, product engineering and IT competencies.

  • 2020 holiday design contest winners announced

    LAVAL, Canada - 2020 recently announced the winners of its 2018 Holiday Design Fest Contest. Interior designers submitted their "jolliest and cheeriest" designs using 2020 Design and 2020 Fusion. 
     
    “All the designs that were submitted are both beautiful and very festive,” says Santiago Morales, 2020 Design product manager. “I’m glad designers are using the new 2020 Cloud Decorative Items to decorate their designs, and we will continue to add new items to give users a chance to be even more creative with their designs.”
     
    2020 recently added an array of festive items to its 2020 Cloud that designers can use to create holiday-themed designs. The 2020 Decorative Items catalog is compatible with recent versions of 2020 Design and 2020 Fusion.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

    MIAMI -- All economic activities that occur in the natural world require resources such as energy, materials and land, while generating waste and polluting emissions as unwanted byproduct. Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling?   • WMS 2019 reports brisk exhibit sale activity

    Mississauga – CCI Canada, the organization that runs the 2019 Woodworking Machinery & Supply Conference and Expo, reports that exhibit sales are running well ahead of last year’s event a year out from the show.  WMS, to be held October 31 to November 2, 2019,  is more than 30% ahead of the 2017 event's pace in terms of exhibitors and exhibit space.  “Our 2017 event created a lot of positive momentum and exhibit space sales have continued on a roll since then,” said Tim Fixmer, CEO of CCI Canada, Inc.  WMS 2017 featured more than 270 companies and brands.  “We’ve seen a great uptick in new exhibitors and also exhibitors returning after missing a few show cycles,” said Fixmer.
    Planning is underway for an expanded conference agenda that includes an opening morning keynote that will be free for all attendees.  “We plan to have a marquee presenter to kick the show off in a big way,” said Harry Urban, WMS show manager.
    The education portion of WMS will feature two learning tracks and keynote luncheons.   “Our education program will be devoted to best business practices and technology and design trends,” said Urban.   Also new this year will be learning on the show floor.
    According to Urban, a post event survey from WMS 2017, revealed 87% of the show’s 4,500 attendees plan to return to next year’s show.  "This is the show that brings our industry together and makes it stronger," said Trevor Chaulk, president of Chaulk Woodworking in Minden, ON. "With a vast array of topics in the seminars,supplier networking and machinery advancements it provides the tools for a great future in the wood industry," he said

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

    ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry.   • Contrat historique pour Conception R.P.

SketchUp

SketchUp, formerly Google Sketchup, is a 3D modeling computer program for a wide range of drawing applications such as architectural, interior design, landscape architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, film and video game design. It is available as a web-based application, SketchUp Free,[4] a freeware version, SketchUp Make,[5][6][7] and a paid version with additional functionality, SketchUp Pro.[8]

SketchUp is owned by Trimble Inc.,[1][9] a mapping, surveying and navigation equipment company.[10] There is an online library of free model assemblies (e.g. windows, doors, automobiles), 3D Warehouse, to which users may contribute models. The program includes drawing layout functionality, allows surface rendering in variable "styles", supports third-party "plug-in" programs hosted on a site called Extension Warehouse to provide other capabilities (e.g. near photo-realistic rendering) and enables placement of its models within Google Earth.[11]

SketchUp debuted in August 2000 as a general-purpose 3D content creation tool and was envisioned as a software program "that would allow design professionals to draw the way they want by emulating the feel and freedom of working with pen and paper in a simple and elegant interface, that would be fun to use and easy to learn and that would be used by designers to play with their designs in a way that is not possible with traditional design software. It also has user friendly buttons to make it easier to use."[3]
