WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the equipment you ought to start with, let us talk about where you’ll perform your woodworking, Depending on the dimensions of your home, you may be able to produce a dedicated space into your woodworking tasks. This may be a reserved place in your garage or in your cellar. Sometimes, a detached shed or outbuilding might be ideal to prepare your very first store. Without sophisticated dust control methods, basement workshops will inevitably create dust that travels into the living area of your house. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems where cold air yields found in the cellar draw dust up into the upper levels of the house. Another benefit of detached workshops would be, of course, the noise level. It’s possible to work without disturbing the rest of the household. YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is obviously a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your evolution, everyone from beginner to expert all wishes that they include more space to function in. Woodworking Miter Saw if you can have a dedicated place for a workshop all the better. Floor gear and bench top equipment can stay in place from project to project. If this installation isn’t impossible, at least try to create a bench area where equipment could be saved and pulled out as necessary. If at all possible plan for inevitable expansion as you get more tools and gear. At the start, set up a seat area where you can store and use the majority of your equipment, using a temporary expansion of your activities onto the basement or garage floor.

A basic workbench can be constructed from inexpensive spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench needs to be around waist height. That will enable you to work comfortably while standing. Add a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to home your hands power tools along with a pegboard over the bench to hang additional equipment. Put in a woodworking vice at one end of your bench on front to maintain small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Woodworking Miter Saw

The scope of your startup equipment will be largely based on your budget. Whether you’ve got large financial resources or you’re starting on a shoestring consistently purchase quality gear. If you can afford it, buy your quality tools in the local construction and hardware centre. If your budget is tight purchase quality used tools from others through Kijiji or alternative local advertisements. There are an abundance of quality gently used programs out there that belong to people who stumbled on that one molding project around the house or received tools as gifts that they will never utilize. You can usually purchase tools for these sellers for under half the original cost and save even more money if you create a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Of course, acquiring tools from private individuals will take additional time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh out the benefits of traveling across town to save a few extra dollars on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The excess cost of travel and time in these situations is generally justified when purchasing large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or high ended tools such as surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a visit to your building center could possibly be the best approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient employees worked using a minimal amount of hand gear yet generated sophisticated and complex pieces. Concentrate on developing your skills with your startup set of tools and avoid lamenting about the equipment you wished you had.
Here’s a listing of the more useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as expected by eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses that also offer you some side protection for your eyes. Purchase a quality oil collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper vinyl pairs will eventually hamper your vision and influence safety. Avoid wearing goggles in a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up fast. You can avoid wearing all of them together in the event that you find them uncomfortable.

The next piece of critical safety equipment you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection can be overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as critical as eye protection. Woodworking can be long-term and noisy exposure to these noise levels may affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. With this set up I am protecting my eyes and my ears. I’m keeping the dust from my hair. I’m all set!

Power Hand Saw: Often referred to as a skill saw after the favorite brand name, this can prove to be the most flexible instrument in a start-up workshop. In fact, in the hands of an expert, a power hand saw can be used to build an whole house. As mentioned before get a quality brand saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. These tend to cut back and will burn out before you even start your second job. After selecting the proper saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lower quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a backup and install an excellent blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include great versatility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This versatile tool can’t only cut curves. It is perfect for cutting holes in wood also like manage slots. At some point, you’re going to want to obtain a band saw. Bandsaws are much more versatile but a quality floor unit could be expensive. A jigsaw can be a good stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Purchase an range of blades to your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill which runs at least 12 volts, nevertheless, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it is in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch chuck within the standard 3/8 inch version. Through tough lessons learned, I have found that buying quality, in this case, is much more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to have very short run times and have to be recharged frequently. Their battery life tends to be bad and to make things worse keyless chucks come loose and slip frequently. This is 1 annoyance you don’t want in your workshop. Buy an assortment of superior carbide tipped drill bits which are kept in a holder tagging each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning every drill piece to its prospective slot in the holder after each use. Lastly, get a set of hard steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a flexible screwdriver, particularly if you selected an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most versatile instrument in the store, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} By the way, the hammer is the 1 tool where most workshop accidents happen. Although the most ordinary, hammer injuries are often of a minor character, varying from bruised fingers to the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in quality and price. So what is the difference between a cheap hammer and an expensive hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a good solid joint between the handle and head. The good hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and features a comfortable handle. Many hammers in the high-quality range provide ceramic or metal handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with inferior joints between the handle and head. The mind typically comes loose and the instrument becomes useless. Pick a title brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce range for overall work and a smaller completing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using big framing hammers in the workshop and any with dimpled mind tips. These types of hammers are more appropriate for rough framing jobs and are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This little power tool can handle just about any trimming requirements that you’ve got as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you will likely upgrade to a floor model disc and belt sander. But for the time being, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up edges, cross cuts and even limited amounts of surface area. As you embark on the first few projects you’ll find that your palm sander using just a little bit of effort can transform rough looking creations into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks with 100 grit paper and later finish your job with 200 or 300 grit paper. Purchase an assortment of sandpaper sheets with an excess source of 100 grit paper. You’ll get this grade of paper the most versatile in your store.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are essential in each workshop. |} Though low tech in theory, these tools enable you to taper edges, sew high stains and correct any imperfections in timber pieces. {Begin with a standard number 4 plane and an assortment of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you’ll want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold down your wood pieces as you work on them. Unfortunately, good clamps are expensive and it normally takes the novice woodworker a couple of years to accumulate a comprehensive set of timber clamps. Begin with a pair of long”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe was replaced with extended steel shafts, but the structure is still the same. Receive a pair of the longest clamps which you could afford. You may contact them for smaller adhesive jobs and expand them to their full length for bigger projects.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed in the end of your bench is ideal for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Purchase a woodworking vice with stainless steel clamping surfaces and avoid metal working vices with steel jaws. Woodworking vices using their wood clamping surfaces can securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. A number of the greater vices offer you quick release mechanisms that enable the user to quickly open and close the jaws without dull handle turning. The timber beamed surfaces on your vice will occasionally need replacement. I would rather utilize soft pine in my vices that will not crush or damage lots of the different woods that I utilize. Whether I am working in walnut or hard walnut, softwood clamping surfaces work the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape measure will be among the most frequently used tools. Purchase a fantastic excellent name brand tape measure with a wide tape typically in the 25-foot range. Even though in your store you might not use the tape at these spans, the bigger tape measures provide more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slip off the end of boards. Measuring when you are by yourself will be a lot simpler, and of course, quality tape steps can last for many years.

When marking projects, I prefer a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pen will generate a wonderful mark without scratching the wood.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

Miter saw

A miter saw (also known as a "mitre" outside of the United States) is a saw used to make accurate crosscuts and miters in a workpiece by pulling a large backsaw or a mounted circular saw blade down onto a board in a quick motion. Miter saws are commonly referred to as drop saws and abrasive cut off saws are referred to as a chop saw.

A power miter saw, also known as a drop saw, is a power tool used to make a quick, accurate crosscut in a workpiece at a selected angle. Commonly used for cutting of molding and trim. Most miter saws are relatively small and portable, with common blade sizes ranging from eight to twelve inches.[1]

The power miter saw was invented by Ed Niehaus, a tool designer for Rockwell, in 1964. The miter saw showcased several innovations still found today: radial arc spring action, blade braking and dust collection. Rockwell did not patent the design, leading to a large number of manufacturers and innovation improvements.[2]
