A small home workshop can generate a wide variety of simple projects that will help you develop your creative and construction abilities while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products that you are able to enjoy and even give away to family and friends.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the gear you should start with, let’s talk about where you’ll perform your woodworking, based on the dimensions of your house, you may be able to create a dedicated space to your woodworking tasks. This may be a reserved spot on your garage or in your cellar. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding may be ideal to prepare your very first store. A heated shop detached from your home offers one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without complex dust control methods, basement assignments will inevitably create dust that travels to the living area of your home. This is particularly true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air yields located in the cellar draw up dust into the top levels of the home. Another advantage of detached workshops is, clearly, the noise level. It’s possible to work without bothering the rest of the family. A good compromise might be the garage of your property.

This might help decrease the difficulties of dust and sound, however based on where you reside, a keyword garage layout may not be sensible during extremes of cold or hot weather.

How to Become a Master Woodworker From Your Own Home Woodworking Project Gift Ideas

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is obviously a challenge for the woodworker. Regardless of where you are in your evolution, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes that they add more space to work in. Woodworking Project Gift Ideas if you’re able to have a dedicated spot for a workshop all the greater. Floor tools and bench top equipment can stay in position from project to project. If this setup isn’t impossible, at least try to create a bench area where equipment can be stored and pulled out as needed. If possible plan for inevitable expansion as you get more tools and gear. In the beginning, establish a seat area where you are able to store and use the majority of your equipment, with a temporary expansion of your actions onto the basement or garage floor.

A basic workbench could be constructed from inexpensive laminated timber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be about waist height. This will enable you to work comfortably while standing. Insert a sturdy shelf below the bench to house your hands power tools along with a pegboard above the seat to hang additional gear. Put in a woodworking at one end of your bench on front to hold small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Woodworking Project Gift Ideas

The scope of your start-up equipment will be largely based on your budget. Whether you have got large financial resources or you’re starting on a shoestring always purchase quality equipment. If you can afford it, purchase your quality tools at the local construction and hardware centre. If your budget is tight purchase quality used tools from others through Kijiji or alternative local advertisements. There are plenty of quality lightly used tools out there that belong to individuals who embarked on that one molding project around the house or obtained tools as gifts that they will never use. You can usually purchase tools for all these sellers for less than half of the original cost and save even more money if you make a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, getting tools from private people will require additional time and perhaps travel expenses. Weigh out the advantages of traveling across town to save a few extra bucks on a inexpensive piece of equipment. The excess cost of travel and time in these scenarios is usually justified when purchasing large ticket items like table saws, bandsaws or large finished tools such as surface planers in the future.
For smaller acquisitions, a trip to your construction center could possibly be the ideal approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times proficient employees worked with a minimum quantity of hand gear yet produced sophisticated and intricate pieces. Focus on developing your skills with your start-up set of tools and avoid lamenting about the gear you wished you’d.
Here is a listing of the more useful tools You Will Need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated with eye protection. Get a nice pair of safety glasses which also offer you some side protection for your eyes. Buy a quality acrylic collection that’ll be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of thinner plastic pairs will gradually hamper your vision and affect security. Avoid wearing gloves at a workshop. Most impair eyesight and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing them all together in the event that you find them uneasy.

The next piece of critical safety equipment you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as critical as eye protection. Woodworking may be noisy and long-term exposure to those noise levels can affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. Also, I find that wearing hearing protection combats exhaustion.

Most workers tire faster when exposed to elevated sound levels. Select effective hearing protection that you find comfortable and effective. These may include earplugs or full ear keyword muff protectors. I find a excellent pair of ear muff guards is ideal for hearing protection.

Lastly, wear a cap to keep the dust from your hair. I prefer a simple ball cap along with my ear muffs and eye protection. I am keeping the dust from my hair. I’m good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Often known as a skill saw following the popular name, this can end up being the most flexible tool in a startup workshop. In reality, at the hands of a professional, a power hand saw can be employed to build an whole house. Eventually, you are going to want to purchase a table saw, but for now, a power hand saw for the woodworker on a budget enables him to perform cross cuts, tear cuts and even elaborate angle cuts. As mentioned earlier get a quality manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these tend to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you even start your second project. After choosing the proper saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lesser quality even if they are a fantastic saw. Keep this blade for a copy and install a quality blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade. These have a balanced tooth count that works well with both crosscuts and ripping.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include excellent flexibility to a woodworking. |} Curved cutting is the point where the jigsaw excels. This flexible instrument can’t just cut curves. It is perfect for cutting holes in wood too like manage slots. Eventually, you’ll want to obtain a band saw. Bandsaws are much more flexible but a excellent floor unit could be costly. A jigsaw may be a good stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Buy an assortment of blades for your own jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: Purchase an excellent drill which runs on at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it is in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss within the standard 3/8 inch model. Through tough lessons learned, I have discovered that buying quality, in this case, is much more crucial than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to have very short run times and have to be recharged often. Their battery life will be bad and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is 1 annoyance you don’t need in your workshop. Purchase an range of superior carbide tipped drill bits that are kept in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Make a habit of returning each drill piece to its potential slot in the holder after every use. Last, get a set of tough steel driver bits. Your drill may also be a flexible screwdriver, especially if you picked an 18-volt version.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most flexible instrument in the store, and frequently the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the one tool where most workshop accidents happen. Although the most ordinary, hammer accidents are usually of a minor character, varying from bruised palms into the temporary reduction of a fingernail. Hammers significantly vary in quality and price. So what is the difference between a inexpensive hammer and a costly hammer? Quality hammers are precisely machined with a fantastic solid joint between the handle and head. The fantastic hammer is balanced, doesn’t rust and features a comfortable handle. Most hammers in the high tech range offer metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers usually have wood handles with poor joints between the head and handle. The head typically comes loose and the tool becomes useless. Pick a name brand quality hammer at the 16-ounce range for general work and also a smaller finishing hammer for more complex work. Avoid using large framing hammers in the workshop and any with dimpled head tips. These kinds of hammers are more appropriate for rough framing jobs and therefore are unsuitable from the workshop.

Palm Sander: Buy a 1/4 sheet palm sander. This little power tool can manage pretty much any sanding requirements you have as a beginner woodworker. As your woodworking skills evolve, you’ll likely upgrade to a floor version disc and belt sander. But for now, the ever-versatile palm sander may clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited quantities of surface area. As you embark on your first few projects you might find that your palm sander using just a little bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual works of art! It is possible to use your palm sander to sand and shape rough boards using 100 grit paper and later finish your work with 200 or even 300 grit paper. Buy an assortment of sandpaper sheets using an extra source of 100 grit paper. You’ll find this grade of paper that the most versatile on your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These classic tools are essential in each workshop. |} Although low tech in theory, these tools allow you to taper borders, sew high stains and fix any imperfections in timber pieces. {Begin with a standard number 4 airplane and an range of quality chisels varying in width from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold down your wood pieces as you operate on them. Unfortunately, superior clamps are expensive and it usually requires the novice woodworker a couple of years to collect a comprehensive set of wood clamps. Begin with a set of long”pipe” clamps. Today the pipe has been replaced with long steel shafts, however, the structure is still the same. Get a pair of the maximum clamps that you can spend. You may contact them for smaller glue jobs and enlarge them to their entire length for larger projects.

Shop Vice: A store vice installed at the end of your bench is perfect for holding smaller jobs for trimming, filing, and gap cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and avoid metal functioning vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices with their wood clamping surfaces may securely hold wood bits without marring or damaging them. Many of the greater vices offer rapid release mechanisms that enabled the consumer to quickly open and close the limbs without tedious handle turning. The timber beamed surfaces on your vice will occasionally require replacement. I would rather utilize soft pine in my vices which won’t crush or damage many of the various woods that I utilize. Whether I’m working in walnut or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: On your workshop, the ever-humble tape measure is going to be among the most frequently used tools. Buy a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a broad tape usually from the 25-foot selection. Although in your store you may not be using the tape at these lengths, the larger tape measures provide more rigid tapes that won’t flop around and slide off the end of planks. Assessing when you are by yourself will be a great deal easier, and of course, quality tape steps can endure for many decades.

When marking projects, I favor a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pen will produce a wonderful mark without scratching the wood. Harder pens like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will need additional sanding.

  • Storage tips for wine collectors

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Allegretto Wines, a single vineyard winemaker in Paso Robles, California,  released the report ‘Storage Tips for Wine Collectors,’ providing tips on storage space, storage methods, the best temperatures for storing and serving, and creative ideas for building a wine cellar on a budget.

“One of the conversation topics in our tasting room is the best storage methods for wine,” said Quin Cody, Director of Hospitality, “the tips in this report are going to help answer some of those questions.”

Following are four tips on the best methods of storing wine:

    Figuring out storage space

The storage space needed depends on the number of bottles you on hand, or already have but don’t have adequate space. Buying a wine refrigerator is a common solution to storing wine, but sometimes the wine refrigerator may cost more than the family budget allows.

There are options for adding or increasing wine cellar space that include re-purposing a closet or cabinet or even adding a “wine room” in the garage. But before getting into remodeling ideas, you still need to know how many bottles you want to have available. Here is a quick estimate (based on ceilings that are nine feet high):

500 bottles or less needs about 25 square feet of space
1,000 bottles would use 50 square feet

It might seem that 500 bottles are a lot of wine, but a single person enjoying a bottle with dinner three or four nights a week adds up to more than 200 bottles a year. Figure in what is shared with dinner guests and gifted to friends and family. If you entertain frequently you can reach 500 bottles a year easily.

The space calculations need to include wines that are being allowed to age, those you are keeping for special occasions and those you will be drinking soon. Once the storage space is figured out, decide on the best affordable storage method that is going to meet the temperature and humidity needs of your special wines.

    Temperature, UV light, and humidity

Wine is typically stored at one temperature and served at a different temperature. The ideal storage temperature for most reds and whites is 55 degrees. Serving temperatures vary by the wine:

Traditionally, red wines were served at room temperature, but the modern-day thermostat means homes are kept at a variety of temperatures for personal comfort. The ideal serving temperature for red wine is from 60 - 65 degrees F.

White wines are best served slightly chilled between 50 - 60 degrees.

Sparkling wines and champagne usually taste best chilled to around 40 degrees.

The kitchen refrigerator temperature is usually at around 40 degrees F. Too cold to store wine but a good temperature to chill a sparkling wine. Not sure when the wine has reached the appropriate serving temperature? Use an inexpensive wine bottle thermometer to know when the bottle is ready to pour.

    UV rays and humidity

UV rays cause chemical reactions that can change a wine’s flavor and color in unfavorable ways. Keep your wine collection out of the sunlight.

Wines with cork closures need sufficient humidity at around 70-percent to keep the corks moist and expanded so some kind of humidity control is important. Store corked wines on their sides to help keep the cork moist. Screw top bottles don’t require the same kind of humidity control, but since most people collect both corked and screw-topped wines these days, humidity control is the best way to go.

    Building a ‘cellar’

Wine coolers, or refrigerators, start at around $200 for 20 or so bottles of wine and price upwards from there. When space is an option, some wine refrigerators can be stored in closets or in the garage and this works perfectly for many people. Some collectors want a more formal “cellar.” Remodeling closets, under stair spaces, kitchens, and garages are becoming popular ways to create dedicated wine storage. There are several good do-it-yourself sources on the Internet or give your local construction company a call for an estimate.

If you are collecting as an investment, leasing commercial wine storage is a safe way to protect your investment.

  • Sustainability challenges to be discussed at Decorative Surfaces Conference

Today the demand for natural resources and the production of pollution exceed the regenerative capacity of the Earth and put us face to face with one of the biggest challenges of our time: moving towards a sustainable economy. But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • Learn about American Woodmark's foray into RFID

ATLANTA, GA -- According to Henry Nisiobincki, the idea that each item is unique in woodworking holds true more than in any other industry. Nisiobincki, RFID Program Manager at American Woodwork Corporation, faced this challenge as he guided the company to benefit from RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology.

"The questions we asked were, how could we identify the unique history of each unique part?  And how can we use that information to help measure quality, control process flows, and improve inventory accuracy?"

Nisiobincki said that by using integrated RFID technology to create a unique identity for each piece, American Woodmark Corporation has seen continuous benefit and value.  He will show how a simple low-cost addition to each piece can be the solution for endless cost-savings, as well as the platform for future innovation.  He will discuss American Woodmark's RFID integration  in his presentation at IWF on August 21, titled,  A Unique Technology, in a Unique Part, for a Unique Industry. CustomMade

CustomMade is an online custom jeweler. Until 2015, the business operated as an online marketplace connecting customers with independent artisans (called "custom makers") who produce custom-designed furniture, jewelry, home décor, and other personalized items.[1][2] CustomMade is the world's first and largest online seller of custom products.[3][4][5] They have 3,500 custom makers registered on the site and have raised a total of $7.65 million in venture funding.[6] On May 21, 2015, the business was acquired by Wayfair (NYSE: W) for an undisclosed sum after having raised $25.65MM in venture funding. In May 2017, it was announced that founder Seth Rosen had re-purchased the business out of foreclosure in partnership with Western Technology Investment (WTI) to focus on building the custom jewelry business.[7][8][9]

Co-founders Michael Salguero and Seth Rosen met as undergraduates at Boston University, where both had a passion for custom-made shirts, belts, and pants.[10][11][12] The two founders had careers in real estate and were looking for more exciting work.[13][14][15] In January 2009, Salguero and Rosen bought the custommade.com URL for $150,000 from a woodworker who had owned and run the site since 1996.[13][14][16][17] At the time of the purchase, the site hosted around 350 makers paying a small subscription fee to be on the site. The site was generating about $35,000 a year in subscription sales.[13] According to Salguero, the new company became based on two principles:

The founders spent much of the first year rebuilding the site's interface and visiting woodworking and craft fairs to sign up custom makers with the site.[10] In January 2009, they raised a $400,000 seed round.[20] Early versions of CustomMade.com drew visitors, but only a small number of those visitors ordered items.[21] CustomMade redesigned the site with help from Google Ventures and within a week, increased the number of paying projects by 200 percent.[21] From 2009 to 2010, the number of visitors to the site tripled to a total of 1.5 million, and in 2010, CustomMade earned $350,000 in revenue.[1]
