A small home workshop can produce a wide variety of simple projects that will allow you to develop your creative and construction abilities while rewarding you with practical and artistic wood products which you can enjoy and also give away to friends and family.

WHERE TO DO YOUR WOODWORKING

Before we get into the equipment you should begin with, let’s talk about where you will perform your woodworking, Depending on the dimensions of your home, you might be able to create a dedicated space into your woodworking activities. This might be a reserved place on your garage or in your cellar. In some cases, a detached shed or outbuilding might be perfect to set up your very first shop. A heated store detached from your house provides one distinct advantage: better pest management. Without complex dust control systems, basement assignments will inevitably produce dust which travels to the living area of your house. This is very true in homes with forced air heating systems in which cold air returns located in the cellar draw up dust into the top levels of the house. Another benefit of detached workshops would be, of course, the noise level. It’s possible to work without bothering the remainder of the household. A fantastic compromise might be the garage of your home.

This can help decrease the problems of dust and noise, however depending on where you reside, a keyword garage layout might not be sensible during extremes of cold or hot weather.

YOUR WOODWORKING SETUP

Space is always a struggle for the woodworker. Irrespective of where you are in your development, everybody from beginner to expert all wishes they add more space to work in. Woodworking Project Plans Pdf if you can have a dedicated spot for a marathon all the greater. Floor gear and bench top gear can remain in position from project to project. If this installation isn’t hopeless, at least attempt to create a bench area where equipment could be stored and pulled out as necessary. If at all possible plan for inevitable expansion as you acquire more tools and gear. At the start, set up a bench area where you are able to shop and use the majority of your gear, with a temporary expansion of your activities onto the basement or garage floor.

A basic workbench could be constructed from inexpensive spruce lumber ideally at least 48 to 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep. |} The bench should be around waist height. That will let you work comfortably while standing. Insert a sturdy shelf beneath the seat to house your hand power tools along with a pegboard above the seat to hang additional equipment. Install a woodworking vice at one end of your seat on front to hold small workpieces.

ACQUIRING YOUR EQUIPMENT, Woodworking Project Plans Pdf

The reach of your startup equipment will be largely based on your budget. Whether you’ve got large financial resources or you are starting on a shoestring consistently buy quality equipment. If you can afford it, buy your quality tools in your regional construction and hardware center. If your budget is tight buy quality used tools from the others through Kijiji or alternative regional advertisements. There are plenty of quality gently used tools out there which belong to people who embarked on that 1 molding project around the house or obtained tools as presents that they will never utilize. You can usually buy tools for these sellers for less than half of the original cost and save even more money should you make a bundle deal for all their unused equipment. Obviously, acquiring tools from private individuals will require extra time and perhaps travel expenditures. Weigh the benefits of traveling around town to save a couple added bucks on a inexpensive piece of gear. The extra cost of travel and time in these situations is usually justified when buying large ticket items such as table saws, bandsaws or large ended tools like surface planers later on.
For smaller acquisitions, a visit to your building center may be the best approach.

START-UP EQUIPMENT

In earlier times skilled employees worked with a minimum quantity of hand equipment yet produced sophisticated and intricate pieces. Concentrate on developing your skills with your start-up set of resources and prevent lamenting about the gear you wished you had.
Here’s a listing of the useful tools you’ll need to get started:
Safety Gear: Start as anticipated with eye protection. Get a decent pair of safety glasses that also offer you some side protection to your eyes. Buy a quality acrylic collection that will be scratch resistant. Progressive scratching of cheaper vinyl pairs will eventually hamper your vision and affect safety. Avoid wearing gloves at a workshop. Most impair vision and dust up quickly. You may avoid wearing them all together if you find them uncomfortable.

The next bit of crucial safety gear that you’ll need involves ear protection. Ear protection is often overlooked by the novice woodworker however is almost as crucial as eye protection. Woodworking may be noisy and long-term exposure to these sound levels may affect hearing and result in tinnitus and other hearing losses. I am keeping the dust out of my hair. I am good to go!

Power Hand Saw: Often referred to as a skill saw following the popular brand name, this can prove to be the most versatile tool in a start-up workshop. In reality, in the hands of an expert, a power hand saw could be used to build an whole house. As mentioned earlier get an excellent manufacturer saw. Stay away from cheap unknown brands. All these tend to cut inaccurately and will burn out before you start your next job. After selecting the proper saw put in an excellent blade. Most saws come with a starter blade of lesser quality even if they’re a fantastic saw. Keep this blade as a copy and install a quality blade with carbide teeth. Start with a hybrid blade.

Power Jig Saw: A jigsaw will include excellent versatility to your woodworking. |} Curved cutting is where the jigsaw excels. This versatile tool cannot just cut curves. It is ideal for cutting holes in wood also like manage slots. At some point, you’ll want to get a ring saw. Bandsaws are even more versatile but a excellent floor unit could be costly. A jigsaw can be a fantastic stop gap for the novice woodworker.

Purchase an assortment of blades for your jigsaw that includes various lengths and teeth per inch.

Battery Powered Drill: buy a quality drill which runs at least 12 volts, however, 18 volts is better. |} Get one with a keyless chuck and if it’s in your budget contemplate a 1/2 inch toss within the conventional 3/8 inch model. Through tough lessons learned, I have found that buying quality, in this case, is much more critical than ever. Cheaper drills have a tendency to have very short run times and need to be recharged often. Their long-term battery life tends to be bad and to make matters worse keyless chucks come loose and slip often. This is one annoyance you don’t need in your workshop. Purchase an assortment of superior carbide tipped drill bits which are stored in a holder labeling each drill bit size. Create a habit of returning every drill piece to its potential slot in the holder after each use. Lastly, get a pair of tough steel driver bits. Your drill can also be a flexible screwdriver, particularly if you selected an 18-volt model.

Hammer: The hammer remains as the most flexible tool in the store, and often the most misunderstood one. |} Incidentally, the hammer is the one tool where most workshop injuries happen. Even though the most frequent, hammer injuries are often of a minor character, varying from bruised palms into the temporary loss of a fingernail. Hammers greatly vary in quality and price. So what’s the difference between a inexpensive hammer and a costly hammer? Quality hammers are just machined with a good solid joint between the handle and mind. The good hammer is balanced, does not rust and features a comfortable handle. Many hammers in the high-quality range offer metal or fiberglass handles. Cheaper hammers generally have wood grips with poor joints between the handle and head. The mind usually comes loose and the instrument becomes useless. Select a name brand quality hammer in the 16-ounce range for general work and also a smaller completing hammer for more intricate work. Avoid using large framing hammers in the workshop and any with dimpled mind tips. These types of hammers are more suited for rough framing tasks and therefore are unsuitable in the workshop.

Palm Sander: Purchase a 1/4 sheet . This tiny power tool can handle just about any sanding requirements you have as a novice woodworker. As your woodworking abilities evolve, you’ll likely update to a floor model disc and belt sander. But for now, the ever-versatile palm sander can clean up borders, cross cuts and perhaps even limited quantities of surface area. As you embark on your first few projects you’ll discover that your palm sander with a bit of effort can change rough looking inventions into virtual functions of art! You can use your palm sander to sand and form rough planks using 100 grit paper and after finish your work with 200 or 300 grit paper. Buy an range of sandpaper sheets using an extra supply of 100 grit paper. You’ll get that this grade of paper the most versatile in your shop.

Hand Planes and Chisels: These traditional tools are a must in every workshop. |} Though low tech in theory, these tools allow you to taper borders, flatten high spots and fix any imperfections in wood bits. {Begin with a typical number 4 plane and an range of quality chisels varying in diameter from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

Clamps: Sooner or later you will want pliers for glue-ups and simply to hold off your wood bits as you operate on them. Unfortunately, good clamps are expensive and it normally takes the novice woodworker a few years to collect a comprehensive set of timber clamps. Start with a set of extended”pipe” clamps. Now the pipe was replaced with extended steel shafts, however, the structure is still the same. Receive a set of the maximum clamps which you could spend. You may get in touch with them for smaller adhesive jobs and enlarge them to their full length for bigger projects.

Shop Vice: A shop vice installed in the end of your seat is ideal for holding smaller tasks for trimming, filing, and hole cutting with your jigsaw. Buy a woodworking vice with replaceable wooden clamping surfaces and avoid metal working vices with metal jaws. Woodworking vices using their wood clamping surfaces may securely hold wood pieces without marring or damaging them. Many of the better vices offer rapid release mechanisms that enabled the consumer to rapidly open and close the jaws with no dull handle turning. The timber beamed surfaces in your vice will periodically require replacement. I would rather use soft walnut in my vices that won’t crush or damage many of the various woods that I work with. Whether I’m working in soft pine or hard oak, softwood clamping surfaces function the best.

Tape Measure and Marking Device: In your workshop, the ever-humble tape measure is going to be among the most frequently used tools. Purchase a fantastic quality name brand tape measure with a broad tape typically from the 25-foot selection. Even though in your shop you might not use the tape in these spans, the larger tape steps offer more rigid tapes that will not flop around and slip off the ending of boards. Assessing when you’re on your own will be a great deal easier, and naturally, quality tape steps can endure for several years.

When marking jobs, I prefer a sharp good old-fashioned HB pencil. An HB pencil will produce a nice mark without scratching the wood. Harder pencils like 2B’s can scratch softwoods and will require additional sanding.

But what does sustainability mean? Despite its simplicity, sustainability is a concept people have a hard time wrapping their minds around: Is it all about recycling? Are “green” or “natural” synonyms for “sustainable”? And last but not least: how can sustainability be addressed in the laminates industry? Does durability play a role there? Let's dig into those questions and debunk some myths.  Dr. Alessandra Fusi, Sustainability specialist with Trespa and Arpa will address all of these questons in her presentation, "Facing the Sustainability Challenge: What Cards Can Our Industry Play?"

  • NKBA Behavior Study Details Kitchen Habits and Impact on Design

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. —  How do people really use their kitchens? This is what the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) endeavored to find out in its latest market research, which offers a detailed analysis into the evolving way homeowners live in their kitchens and how this drives remodeling preferences in the $74 billion kitchen market.

The Lifestyle Segmentation Report, released this month, identifies homeowner attitudes and behaviors regarding cooking, meal preparation, entertaining and kitchen design, and the influence of their lifestyles on the kitchen remodel and installation process.

The national online survey was conducted among nearly 800 adults with household income of $40,000 or higher who had remodeled their kitchen or planned to remodel between November 2016 and August 2018. The survey segmented respondents by their confidence levels regarding cooking abilities, confidence in their kitchen design abilities, and their comfort level with using technology in the kitchen.

“This exclusive research is somewhat of a departure from our traditional studies, which typically analyze product categories, design trends, size of the market and business projections,” said Bill Darcy, NKBA CEO. “It’s the first time we are looking at how changes in consumer lifestyle impact the actual use of our industry’s product and services. The data provides valuable insight for designers, remodelers, dealers, showroom associates and other professionals in how they serve their clients. This commitment to research and analysis reinforces NKBA’s thought leadership in the marketplace, and offers strategic information for the benefit of our membership.”

The report provides data on family dining, meal preparation, entertaining and other activities occur in the kitchen (paying bills, homework, and more). Also reported is how homeowners use technology in the space and what storage needs they require. Furthermore, the study offers a correlation between these elements and design, the need for professionals in the process, how and where consumers shop for and buy kitchen products, and more.

The full Lifestyle Segmentation Report is available for purchase at the NKBA store. For more information, click on NKBA-Lifestyle-Segmentation-Report or NKBA-Lifestyle-Segmentation-Executive-Summary.

Moisture meter

Moisture meters are used to measure the percentage of water in a given substance. This information can be used to determine if the material is ready for use, unexpectedly wet or dry, or otherwise in need of further inspection. Wood and paper products are very sensitive to their moisture content. Physical properties are strongly affected by moisture content and high moisture content for a period of time may progressively degrade a material.

Newly-cut logs can have a moisture content (MC) of 80% or more, depending on species. Since wood shrinks, and can also split, twist or otherwise change shape as it dries, most wood is dried before being used. This is most often done using a kiln, but may use the air drying method, which is much slower. In most parts of the United States, the minimum moisture content that can be generally obtained in air drying is about 12 to 15 percent. Most air-dried material is usually closer to 20 percent moisture content when used.[1]

In-kiln drying is usually monitored by some type of moisture meter. Moisture meters are used to measure the amount of water in the wood so that the woodworker can determine if it is suitable for the intended purpose. Building inspectors and many more, carpenters, hobbyists, and other woodworkers often are required to have moisture meters. Wood flooring installers, for example, have to verify that the MC of the wood matches the relative humidity in the air of the building. If this step is skipped, a vast array of problems may present itself: cracking, cupping, crowning, buckling, sunken joints, and cracked finishes.
